Yeah, the cockerels I culled showed all the signs of being viscous, they pecked the ladies heads, tried to force them down for mating even though too young, even saw 1 kick a lady! They had even started to puff up at me when I handled them, so I am glad they are no longer a problem. They tasted pretty good too, just wish they had been bigger, had to cook 2 to feed my family. Thinking of where and how to build a bachelors grow out pen for when I start hatching next year. The cockerels are all dinners, lol.
Screwball isn't a gentleman with the ladies either. He does his dance, and since my ladies are too young he does chase them after. He has grabbed a few behind the neck and tried to breed them, but he has not injured any of them. He also doesn't fight the ladies for food like the cockerels did. I hope that he will settle some more, he is only 5 months old. The ladies should start maturing in the next month or 2. Once his sex drive is being satisfied I think he will stop this behavior. But I still need a good 2nd Roo. I wish 1 of those cockerels hadnt been so mean, then i would have had my 2nd rooster, but not with the attitudes they had. I have 25 chickens total, I think for heavy breeds it's 10 hens per 1 rooster for best results. But after reading about mycoplasma and other diseases I am very afraid of getting a grown Roo. The only person I know and trust who has chickens is my sister, and she only has her 1 Roo, 9 hens, and the 3 pullets I sent as part of her hubby's b-day present.

Yeah hellion my bantam rooster has started attacking my feet everytime i go into the pen

thing is he's a bantam even dressed he would come out to less then 2 pounds thats only good enough for one person. they both are about 13 weeks and i was hoping this was just a faze but we will see.

starfire the black and white ones are silver campines they are from spain and make 4 lbs hens and 6 lbs cocks they are flighty and busy great foragers lay large white eggs. these have matured quickly they are 11 or 12 weeks now and the little cockerels have been crowing since 5 weeks or so. :) btw i still say you should find a heritage rhode island red cock bird the most docile you will run with your hens safe for small children and pets .

the ones from the hatchery are ...but if you find a breeder with ones referred to as heritage or sop type they will not be aggressive at all. mine sure are not they even get along with each other ..they do establish a pecking order when i run them together but not any fighting like most breeds do. look at the one in my avaitar notice the deep red coloring low tail angle and you can t see from the pic but he is thick and wide flat back ..most hatchery ones are tall and skinny because somewhere in the gene pool they are crossed with leghorns to improve egg laying and they are flock mated for 60 generations the most aggressive cocks have been the ones to get to live so that trait is in most of the ones you see.

Just to let you know what has worked for me. I had a rooster that would run in and attack me every time I gathered eggs. Well, one day I grabbed him, tucked him under my arm, and we went on a long walk. I held him upside down by the legs for a while, I held him high, and I held him low, stroking his head with my entire hand. Mainly I wanted to let him know that our "relationship" was on my terms, not his. He needed another tune--up about a week later, but has been a fine gentleman ever since...(months ago). I really think they often get the desire to test us, and the little walk-about puts everything in perspective. Good Luck!!
