Howdy!

I'm in Lubbock I am completely new to this chicken thing. Lol! I have 5 so far. They are 2 weeks old tmrw and currently living in my laundry room in a brooder box until my husband finishes converting wooden playhouse to chicken shack. I have 2 black astrolorps and 3 buff orpingtons. They are named, of course, by my 3 children. They are Lucy and Ethel, Myrtle, Gertrude and Opal.

Henless....thanks for the info on the horizontal nipples. DH found them on ebay. They're about $2 each $21 for 10...does that sound right? Seems expensive to me.

Compared to changing nasty water buckets on a daily bases? Very cheap I think!

I wish mine did that! But either mine know the trick for what it is and are too smart to go into the coop, or I haven't found their weakness yet. I have given watermelon, grapes, strawberries, lettuce, kale, parsley, squash, cucumber, broccoli, coli flower, and tomatoes. Most fresh from my gardens and while they enjoy the treats, they refuse to get cooped for them. Only when it's evening time will some finally go in, not before. So letting them out is either an all or nothing deal. Unless I feel like chasing and cornering them in my yard, which is exhausting. Dang birds, too smart and stubborn for their own good!

Have you tried mealworms or hen scratch? Mine will do anything for mealworms or boiled eggs. They are just beginning to understand what hen scratch is, and it's fast becoming one of their favorites.

Oh, it is!! Everytime I do it, I almost run into trees, because I am watching behind me and LMAO!!

I was born in Lubbock. Moved to East Texas about 47 yrs ago. I still remember heading to the shelters when the tornadoes showed up.

Raining here again this morning. We got 9/10s an inch of rain yesterday.

Have you tried mealworms or hen scratch? Mine will do anything for mealworms or boiled eggs. They are just beginning to understand what hen scratch is, and it's fast becoming one of their favorites

I am using hen scratch, when I call they will come running, but when I toss some in the coop, they refuse to go in. If I toss some on the ground in front of the coop they will have a field day. If I catch a couple ladies and put them in the coop, some always run right back out, even with scratch on the floor. I don't think they like their coop. A lot will still try to get in the goose coop, which is where they were at first until I got this coop up and running. I lock them in their new coop every night, and they have been in it for a couple weeks now. But they still don't want anything to do with it. Crazy birds.
I haven't tried mealworms yet. With all the goodies they get from my garden and the scratch I use every night to try and put them up, I haven't wanted to over feed treats. Sometimes I go dig a small hole for them to dig for worms though, and after all these rains I have some places that are really soft and full of bugs. The chickens, ducks, and geese were all digging those places up looking for yummies, lol. I can only imagine how crazy they will go now that more of my yard is a sodden mess. It's bug city over here right now.

I really hope we get at least a 1 day break from all the rain. My garden needs to recoperate, my chickens need some outside time, and I need to check for damage, especially that corner of the house where flooding occurred. Guess I need to get my "I'm going under the house to re-level it" clothes and gear on. I hate going under there, I am not clostrophobic, but hate the bugs, and skeletons i find under there, and the creaking when I start shifting the house. I always think the house it might come down on me when I hear the popping and creaking as i re-level it. Sux that I'm the only 1 who can go, hubby is too tall, and everyone else is too scared, lol.
