Hello guys I just found the thread. I am located between San Marcos and Austin. I raise chickens for a stress reliever and eggs are a plus .

I am also wondering if anyone is interested in some cochin cockerels. They are free.

He's a birchen bantam cochin. Very sweet and will eat out of your hand. The other is a Blue silkie. Decent feathering for hatchery birds. Spend the day free ranging, they just need theyre own hens.

The ducks have slowed down laying because of the heat. Our chickens still haven't started yet, probably because of the heat also. But with 20+ ladies and 2 roosters I willbe overwhelmed with eggs when they do start producing. I plan on getting or making a sign that advertises farm fresh eggs sold here. Lol.

Even with 10 layers (eventually), I don't think we'll have enough to post a sign in our yard. I still want to be able to give 'em away to friends/family/neighbors, and enjoy some ourselves. But the occasional dozen for sale works for us. I sold 1 dozen today & will be selling another 2 dozen tomorrow. Then I'll take a break so we can have some, and have some more to give to a friend of ours. Looking forward to watching this egg empire grow! LOL

Our ladies have also slowed down in the egg department. It took a week to get just 2 dozen eggs from 14 hens. We have fans in the coop and they like to gather at the door where the cool air comes out. Even with lots of shade and only 85 degrees they are still really hot. Wish they liked water, we could give them a mist shower to cool off.

There are tomatoes and peas in the garden but with the sun, it's too hot to go out and pick so will wait until later in the evening. We picked and shelled, then FIL put up 22 pints of purple hulls and 8 pints pintos last Friday. DH found us a 22 quart pressure canner for a good price so just waiting for it to get here so we can start doing our own. We cold packed fruit last year but want to put up veggies and meat this year. Bought us a double burner propane cooker on a stand at TSC for $70 so we can do the cooking outside and not heat up the house. Been wanting to get these things for a long time, just haven't had the funds until now. Trying to do everything we can to save money and have our own healthy foods.

How much are you getting for your eggs? Been selling ours for only $2 but that has been to friends at church. By fall we should have 8 more layers so hope to have lots to sell and if we put a sign out I'd like to get more for the eggs. Is $3 still a good price for farm fresh eggs?

I don't know what a good price is. I've seen, on Craigslist, listing for eggs anywhere from $2 to $6 per dozen. I took a chance and asked $5 per dozen (willing to lower price if anyone wanted to negotiate), and I immediately had two buyers wanting to buy 3 dozen between the two of 'em (and wanting to be kept updated on more as they come) So, unless anyone haggles, I'm selling mine $5 per dozen. I think part of the magic of our eggs is the color variety...blue/green, brown & white.

Ahhh...yes that would be worth more...alas ours are just tan and shades of brown...perhaps next year will have more colors.

Go look at what the "fancy" eggs are selling for at the grocery stores near you. Here in our area, the various organic, free range, cage free, etc. eggs go for anywhere from $4-8/dozen.

Even with only 5 hens (4 of whom are laying daily), we've found ourselves in over our heads with eggs.     We've been giving extras away, but we can't give 'em away fast enough (I don't normally bake, and we don't eat very many eggs ourselves)...so I decided to sell the rest, and I've already got a couple of buyers.  It's amazing how much people will pay for "farm" fresh eggs.    Once we get the other 5 pullets (and they start laying eggs) we'll be in the money!  Ha-ha!  My husband loves this chickens already, but the prospect of making any sort of money for their extra eggs makes the whole deal that much sweeter. 

I haven't had enough to sell yet. I have 4 laying. But my daughter would eat eggs all day if you let her: scrambled or fried for breakfast, boiled eggs as snacks, etc. Lol. I just had enough to send hubby to work with a dozen for his boss. That was...Friday? Now were one short of another dozen. But I know half of those will be gone after breakfast lol. And I have a lady at work that keeps asking for some too
Maybe I need more hens to keep up with demand...
My last LF girl is getting ready to lay and then theres the Silkie but..I dont count her lol

So true....I see them a lot around here for $3 a dozen..which is lower than the stores, and better/fresher! After I got chickens, I couldnt buy eggs from the store because of all the sneaky stuff they do with advertising. They may be "free range" for only an hour, and then there are so many, its nothing like having a small flock. They may be "organic" but never see the sun.
Backyard eggs usually have the major brands beat by a mile.
