Quick update on the trampoline hoop coop... Wood sides are complete and cattle panels are on top (but still need attaching) We didn't get a chance to do much yesterday but I plan on knocking a big dent in it today/tomorrow. Got our new recruits yesterday... two Wyandottes and two Americaunas. That doubled the flock when added to our 4 Barred Rocks. Good times!

Oh my. My poor girls are fending for themselves a lot these days. I am getting around slowly after the accident. I mainly have to be careful not to lift anything too heavy. The girls come up to the house for food and water so that I don't have to walk all the way out to the chicken yard. My husband and I ventured out today for a couple of hours. It felt good to get out of the house, but was tiring. Went to the local farm store in Liberty Hill, Winkley's. They had buff orpington and barred rock chicks. Too cute. Oh and guinea chicks. It was soooo hard not to bring some home, but I am in no shape to care for chicks.

Technical question...Are all silkies bantam size? They don't come in full chicken size, right? DH wanted silkies until I told him I think they only come in small size not the size of RIR! Now he's disappointed...!

In America, pretty much. Our Silkies are somewhere in between European bantams/LF.
I think there are projects to make them larger.

they are usually smaller then your average standard, but theyre are standards. Just becareful, silkies have an opening at their heads or weak spot in the skull and if one of your chickens peck it just right, itll kill them.

Yeah, If you're not going to show it, I'd get a chick with a NON vaulted skull. They are more vulnerable to damage, and that comes with the territory if they're going to be in a flock.
Some like the vaulted skulls because it may make their topknow better for showing.
My Silkie is at the bottom of the pecking order though, a vaulted skull would have been a death sentence I think..with as hard as she had it fitting in

We want to try a winter garden this year.  Carrots and spinach, maybe broccoli.  plus a place to put a few potted plants that i don't want to loose.  A greenhouse kit is $150 or more.  Using the trampoline frame, some chicken wire and plastic, I think we could build it cheaper. I've used PVC and Visqueen plastic and a bucket load of zip ties before.  it works well.
If you decide to cover it with plastic put gorilla tape on both sides of the plastic where you're going to attach the zip ties really helps keep the plastic from ripping.

Thanks for the tips! If I get it put together in time, I might try a winter garden too.

Gosh....this year is not a good year for animals for me....
I lost 9 out of 15 of my original chicks the first few days. Lost 3 of my grown (growing) girls, 2 in the last month.
Now our pup has Parvo...and there's nothing we can do except cross our fingers

The most important thing you can do for your pup is to keep it hydrated. If your vet is willing get a ringers IV setup and give the pup as much fluid under the skin as you can at least twice a day. That is the only way we saved our dog. We were giving him 500mil 2-3 times a day. He had to pee alot but it saved him. Parvo attacks the gut and dehydration from diarhea is usually the problem. Good luck, I hope the pup makes it.

He was already grown so less fluid for a puppy. Also if you can get the pup to drink gatorade that will help.

Sorry for the loss of your chicks and chickens.

Ok...thanks for the info...not going to show them. DH wants to try them as broodies. He read they are good brooders and since our reds have no desire to nest but we want to hatch chicks in the spring, Silkies might be the answer. plus they are just cute! Don't know what to expect from our SLW hens or my one Cuckoo maran hen, maybe they will go broody in the spring.
