I brought her inside, in the air-conditioning. Her breathing sounds like it's rattling and she's a little more alert than she was outside, but still too calm for comfort. She has water with her & I gave her apple slices...she's not touching either. I'm going to let her settle in the bathroom for a bit and check on her later. This is how she looks right now. She appears sleepy and disinterested in her water or apple slices. Maybe I should dunk her feet in cool/cold water?

put electrolytes in her water and force her to drink some every now and then. Just dont put ice in it. Cooling her off too quick can cause problems. But dip her beak in it a few times every once in a while.

As she slowly gets electrolytes in her she should start purking up.

If you find something that helps please post..i got a hen doing the same thing plus here comb is very pale, barely pink. All I could get here to eat was some banana and a little bit of cream corn. She just wants to sit on the roost all day. At least the fan blows on her there.

Speaking of combs...does anyone know what causes a hen's comb to flop over? My Brown leghorn hen's comb is lovely red but has flopped to the left.

As of right now, she's in the a/c, she has access to apple slices and water, but wants neither of 'em. She is perking up a bit, but I may soak her whole body in a cool (not cold) bath if things don't improve soon.

Might sound silly but, maybe she would walk around in the bathtub with just a couple inches of cool water without freaking out.

Yolk Peritonitis is our current theory. Distressed breathing, lethargy & yolk-colored discharge. She's had a luke-warm bath, due to my husband thinking she might be egg-bound, and now she's resting in the bathroom again in a towel nest. I'm going to look up all I can about Yolk Peritonitis now...from what we've read, so far, it's almost always fatal.

the comb being large or age can be a result.. nothing of an issue

My White Leghorn's comb is so big it completely covers one eye. Apparently this is common among Leghorns.

Nacogdoches Native recently moved to Marshall. We were lucky enough to find a rent house in the city limits with a landlord who is all about raising chickens for eggs.
The previous renter had a go at it and was kind enough to leave a brooder and an enclosed pen for them to get comfortable in. We wanted a diverse flock and decided to go with 10 chickens of 5 different breeds from a local feed store that I should be picking up next Friday. We plan to get two of each: Rhode Island Red, Americuanas,Plymouth rocks, orpingtons,australorps, and new hampshires if the store can't get one of the others. I found a thread somewhere that stated they were great all around birds. I would love to hear about anyone who has any of these breeds and how they do in east Texas weather!?
Can't wait to pick the little guys up. My three daughters just might,MIGHT, be more excited than me
