Texas

Ken, I swear I am going to enlist you one of these days. I'll come harass you at the trade days.

We have quail and turkeys hatching today. The turkeys are a day early the quail are two days late. Its like Andre and the giants in the Hatcher!!

David, Rooster, and anyone else in my area.. How's the tornado weather treating you? Anyone without power?
The power is still on. The rain and thunderstorms are cramping my style for getting things done, though.

I have a problem. Can someone out there tell me what they think is wrong with one of my girls?

She has an area, below her vent, that is swollen and red. I just noticed it a few minutes ago. She is acting normally, eating and drinking well. Could it be she just got bit by something? If someone could help, it would be greatly appreciated.

Does the area feel hard? Could be a bug bite. The thing that came to my mind to wonder about is if she is egg bound? I think you would be able to feel something like an egg when you palpate?

Edited to add:
Another thing, it could be irritation from mites. Do you see any tiny critters crawling around the vent area or black dots? Do the chickens go in to roost ok? Northern Fowl mites would live on the chicken, Red Mites live in cracks and crevices during the day and come out to feed on the chickens at night.

Hi, I live near the sugarland area. I am looking for contacts to purchase approx 8 laying hens. I did see the info on the Conroe trade days, however I believe that is the weekend I won't be in town. I have searched the Internet for places within driving distance to purchase hens that are laying, and I have come across a few, however many want upwards of $40.00 per hen.
Also the ones I find on Craigslist are mainly roosters.
My question is, do you have laying hens for sale and if not, do you have a contact you could give me?
I am going to be looking for the hens early June.
Thanks in advance.

Have you checked Wabash Feed in Houston? They sell hens and I don't believe they're more than 15 or 20 each. They have several breeds.

Was not able to catch her tonight. Will check in am. I think it is mites. She laid today, so not eggbound. I have been going crazy reseahing, and am pretty sure it is mites. I will take steps to get rid of them first thing in the morning. I have 8 hens and 2 coops. The hens are staying in 1 coop and the other has not been used for a few weeks. We will totally clean and disinfect the empty coop and make the birds roost in that one while we disinfect the coop they are in now.

Thank you for the help and God Bless.

We're alive here. Don't know how much rain we got exactly, but, my rain barrels are full again.

We've got quail and turkey hatching and I'm worried about a power outage. I think we're past that now though.

Hope it lets up long enough tomorrow I can make my trip to Houston tomorrow unscathed. I'm going to pick up some bob whites!

Glad I was able to add a thought to help confirm! I hate dealing with mites, but it is just part of it all! Make sure your chickens have a good place to dust bathe. My dad, now in his 80's talks about how their chickens would dust bathe in the ashes where his momma made the fire to heat up the wash water for laundry!!! I think there is something to that if we can get some ashes gathered up for the chickens' dusting areas!!!

My hens love to take dust bathes in ashes from the burn barrel I have emptied out.
