I have been bit 3 times, 2 nasty *** moccasins and 1 little rattler, you just have to know what to do once bit---and doesn't involve cutting an X.

Hello everyone. We just bought 8 acres in Liberty Hill, TX, but we are originally from the Houston area. We are hoping to pick up a mixed batch of chickens today. I raised chickens for 4H when I was a teenager, but that has been some time ago, and is very different from what we would like to do now. Our land is fully fenced with barbed wire and we were hoping to free range our birds. Additionally we are wanting to avoid gmo feed, but I am even unsure how much they need with free ranging. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Ok so I was told when I moved to Texas from Michigan that if you put meat tenderizer on a snake bite it slows the effect long enough to get to hospital or vet. The reasoning behind that was that snake venom is a protein base and the tenderizer starts to break it down. is this true?

the kids had a friend spend the night and woke up in the wee hours screaming He just got stung by a scorpion! So I dashed out of bed in my nighty and ran to the kitchen one glorious move I grabbed the meat tenderizer and proceeded to bust into the kids room where this unsuspecting 17 yr old boy was sitting in pain on the edge of the bed having been stung in the back. I pushed him over like a pro wrestler and covered his whole back with meat tenderizer! like quick draw if I say so myself.

hmm I thought the look he gave me was odd

since he grew up in Texas one would think he would know that is how you handle those kinds of things. Right?

GUESS????? Educate yourself man!!!! There are only 6 or 7 venomous snakes in Texas....(less in your area).... and once you can identify them....everything else is safe....and if you are unable to do that....then you can't tell the difference between an apple and an orange! !!!

Night and day....the only snakes that can be slightly confusing are coral snakes and king snakes and they are distinguishable by a simple nursery school saying....you know: red and yellow......

Are you really going to claim ignorance as an excuse?

Ok, from someone with a TDA Comm, SPCB Comm, Comm.TX Herp handlers license--there are 5 indigenous species of poisonous snakes in Texas. The Coral, Copperhead, Cottonmouth, Timber Rattlesnake, and Western Diamondback Rattlesnake. Now there are probably at least 40 venomous varieties in our state, if not more. Some of you would freak out if you had a clue of the venomous snake market in this country, you think snakes on a plane was just a movie, yep. The Texas Longnose snake, South Texas, same markings as a coral--looks nothing like it. I know rat snakes and king snakes might get eggs and a chick if you leave 'em where they can get them, but I will live with them----I know the alternative. I hate mice and rats, I don't throw out rat bars and mice packets, my dogs cost way too much for that. Let's talk chicken. rg's

Do it all the time on jellyfish stings when we water ski the Diversionary Canal, I am sure it would be the same for scorpion or wasp, and yes you are correct.

My husband got stung on his foot last night between the toes and I had him stick his foot in a container I had filled with bleach and leave it there a bit. That helped.

Yes...it ran away from home and it likes me better....so it got me thinking about getting more.....(especially when I went to get it some scratch and saw those RIRs and anachucura.(sp?) chicks....

Right now...I'm just hustling to care for this guy....I won't get any more until I'm more educated and equipped......

Meanwhile...this chicken is better off here for now.....and he/she can go home whenever it wants.....

BTW: I thought I'd introduce "Rocky" (the chicken)" to "Sammy" (my cat) face to face last night (Rocky is really scared of Sammy).....

So I put them nose to nose....(I'm holding Rocky....Sammy is on the floor)....they sit there looking at each other for a minute....then Sammy can't help himself.....he wants to smell this critter....

He comes closer for a sniff....Rocky ain't havin' it....and pecks him on the nose....in the blink of an eye....Sammy gives Rocky a pop on the beak with his left paw......

Then they just look at each other......truce?

BTW: I was watching close.....Sammy just gave Rocky a little love tap.....(no claws)....
