Texas

Far East TX in The Piney Woods! About 1 hour north of Beaumont and 1 hour and 15 mins. from Houston International airport. It's rural.

But when I got my first chickens, the Craig's listing was near San Antonio. Also got some from Craig's list in the Hill Country.

Around here -- they also have chickens on 'SouthEastTX.com

It's surprising how difficult it is to find POL pullets, but around here too, (just down the road from me infact) - they also have chicken auctions -- which made me remember another place -- where chickens can be gotten and that is some of the shows and breeders listed on PoultryShowCentral.com

http://www.poultryshowcentral.com/

and chicken shows have chickens for sale too.

NOW -- let me say -- one has to be VERY careful too -- because, sadly, some unknowing or unscrupulous people will sell chickens that are ill -- and that can kill off a person's entire flock. It has happened. Biosecurity is very important. New chickens should be kept in quarantine for 30-days before blending with your own flock.

In the event that you have just 1 chicken though there is a real trade-off IMO. Chickens are flock animals. If you have sourced your chickens from a healthy place and you bring home a healthy chicken -- then leaving your one alone may be more stressful than giving that chicken a companion.

Example, I had a hatch with only 1 chick in April.( -- And so I went to the feedstore and bought a chick to keep it company. A friend had a broody that got no chicks after setting for more than 3-weeks -- because there was some time during which she couldn't find fertile eggs to put UNDER her. When no chicks hatched...then she got two chicks from the feed store and immediately introduced them to the broody hen.

There is that push-pull about biosecurity.....

Just got a news release from the Texas Animal Health Commission when I went to the PO to pick up mail today ...it's dated July 26, 2016

Salmonella out break has been linked to live poultry in backyard flocks - sickened 611 people in 45 states according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

"Even when they appear healthy and clean live poultry may have Salmonella bacteria in their droppings and on their feathers and feet and beaks. Bacteria can also contaminate cages, coops, chick/poult boxes, bedding, plants and soil in the area where the bids live and roam."

There are 6-bullet points included for biosecurity, if anyone wants me to I will list them == more info www.tahc.texas.gov

My sellers license actually just expired, so I can't legally sell anything until I do the paperwork and they come out and inspect. always something new to do.

ETA, I see that there are no swaps listed for our state....
another source of chickens could be a breed club......... One doesn't need show quality chickens for backyard eggs -- but it would be a way to get chickens or chicks (possibly) that would meet certain criteria that belong to that breed. make sense?

ETA - much later
Actually I think selling is OKAY without a seller's license as a 'private treaty ' type sale as long as you have your P/T tests up to date. It is only when you sell in something like an auction that you need that seller's license.

thanks I'll check it, planing to get 4 hens
I have ordered from Ideal. They are great. They do mention shipping extras for warmth (aka 'packing peanuts') so make sure you meet the minimum or you will end up with a lot of roosters. I ended up with 17 once

Cream Lebars - autosexing rare breed
red sex-links - like golden comet
black sex-links - pretty birds sometimes called black stars

all are good layers, golden comets are laying machines.
good luck with your search!!

The weather is Hottest in Aug. I recommend ordering in March when the weather is perfect, chicks die less in traveling and grow healthy at our yard. My hens still laying setting at my yard now, but the hatching rate is less and chick won't be as big as Spring hatch brothers/sisters.
