They are so cute!!! Is mama hen an orp? What are the babies. IMO that first picture would look really good on a calendar! Congratulations to you too!

Thank you. Yes, she is a Buff Orpington. Our rooster is a Lavender Orpington. I think some of the eggs were from our Barred Rocks. They are starting to feather out and I can't wait to see how they look once all feathers are in.
Here's a picture from yesterday. She had all ten of them tucked up under this evening when the temp dropped and the rain came in.

Ok guys, new chicken dad is freaking out here. Momma hen has been at the stage where she has stopped helping the chicks forage, and started chasing them off her finds. She has also been doing weird things like jumping in the barrel that I store the hay in whenever the lid is off, and exploring the dark areas in the shed. So I am thinking nesting behavior, right.

This morning I realized the chicks were following me around as I worked in the yard, which has never happened. And momma is no where to be seen. I have looked everywhere. My thoughts are swinging between brooded up somewhere and caught the bad end of a hawk. I shooed the chicks back to the coop just in case, and can't think of anything other than wait to see if she shows back up.

She is a silkie mix, and there is a bigger flock of leghorns with roosters next door. Maybe she went looking for some lovin? Would she do that?

I set up the back side of the run this weekend so the September chicks could start coming outside to play. They were flying over the fence in the coop and the big hens aren't being very nice to them. My Delaware rooster, Colonel Sanders, may not be the head roo, but you can see, he certainly got busy! That little cockerel in front, we've started to call him Private Sanderson. I think there's at lease one other cockerel in the bunch, but I don't think I'll be keeping any of them. 4 roosters for this flock is enough. I've got some time, though, and Mr. Feathers is almost 7 years old. He and only one hen from my original batch of chicks remain, so I'm wondering if he'll be living much longer.

Hope it is not the hawk. How old are the chicks? -- She thinks she taught them all they need. ;o)

Looks like a happy bunch -- Hatched in Sept -- so 8 weeks old?

Yay for cooler weather! Now that my youngest peeps are outside, I can see their combs better and I'm pretty sure one of the brown ones is also a cockerel. Two of the whites have a pinkish tinge, but still very small combs and nothing else about them screams BOY. Well, we'll see how it turns out. Some of these boys will be going the craigslist way. I can't have 7-8 roosters with only 50+ hens.

Good morning Texas,
I've been all over the emerency section looking for help. I have a year old hen that has been molting. She has been by herself for the last few days and chased away from the food bowl but I've tried to give her food separate from them. On Friday started staggering unable to keep her balance. Nothing is wrong with her hips, legs, nothing paralyzed, she wants to eat and drink she can't keep her balance. Her comb and waffle are red, I started her on corid ad vitamins because we have had a lot of rain. Any ideas? Help?
I did hange them fro aging to grower for the chicks I added to the flock and I do have a mouse that just started hanging around the coop if that makes a difference.

I know nothing about chickens. If you put in "@Amiga" on a post in front of your question it goes to that person. Amiga is great with first aid.
Good luck!
