Texas

Howdy, y'all! I have been a chicken mama since Valentine's Day this year, and they are the little lights of my life! I live outside of small town called Caldwell, which is near Bryan/College Station. Gig'em Aggies!

Hi from North Texas/DFW area. I’d love to see pics of the little lights! Your post made my heart smile!:love

Is there a pamphlet somewhere my chickens can read to tell them about typical chicken behavior?

They're "supposed to" lay eggs in the morning, but more than half of them don't even think about eggs until after noon, and I've more than once had to wait on an egg before bedtime.

Then just this week, I put a nice pile of unfertilized duck eggs in each of the prime nest boxes, trying to encourage a broody so someone can hatch a few more turkey eggs for me. I have this gorgeous assortment of mostly large bodied heritage breeds, many of which are known for their broody tendencies. Who's been sitting on those eggs for the past 2 days? The white leghorn I have so that there's a white egg in each carton for contrast.

Obviously my girls have missed a memo or a training meeting somewhere. :idunno :lau

Make sure the pamphlet is written in chicken scratch or they won't be able to read it!

Same here! I’m glad it’s not just me. Very rarely will I get any eggs before noon! And oftentimes I’ll come home from work around 5:30 and immediately collect eggs, and then I’ll find another egg when I go lock them up at dusk.:lau

Thank you!! They make me soooo HAPPY! Minnie is pure sweetness, always wants to sit in my lap! I love them!:love

I miss having a few babies at a time & being able to spend more one on one time. I’ve got 32 three week olds that I make sure to sit several times a day with, inside the run. Several will nap on my lap & enjoy some head scratching but not all.

I’ve got 10 eleven day olds & 16 four day olds in the brooder. Here’s Bella with one of the Silverudd’s Blue (aka Isbar).

They are adorable! What breed is the one sitting on your knee? I love the coloring! And I know what you mean about spending time with them, even with "just" 30 (I started with only 8, and then chicken math:lau) there are a few that have no interest in me. That's fine, I just let them be and keep offering mealworms. Several shy girls have started to come around!
