"High desert" ... Know it well, from experience OTR. I find our perspectives on the moisture level in a cold environment to fascinating... Your description is a mirror for mine of the opposite conditions.
I have 3 metal plates in my body so there is a bit of bias here. 🤣 Anything that mak a them hurt more than they do all the time is immediately the devil. Tho I do actually really love snow and winter. I hope we get snow soooo bad. But I prefer winter whilst living in houses MADE for winter lmao. Which is not the case down here. When I build my coops, I'll do my birds a favor and consider the cold more so than whoever built my home 🤣

Take a gander at my coop build thread. Viable data for you to file away as you prep your setups. There are several other from across the Pond too that have amazing stuff. But there are also several from.the "snow belt" here in the states and a few Canuck's I have run across as well....

(Looks around) yeah, that's not ADHD stream of consciousness. (Rolls eyes at self)

Well I kinda have the blessing of being about to rip out all my cabinets. And I'm definitely planning on making use of them. I have about 75 ish square feet of floor cabinetry :) so I'm excited to see how I can make all that work.

I also wrote a small article on modifying and upcyxling leftover materials to maximize floor space in our coop too. More food for thought with the idea of having both below and above countertop cabinets for upcycling....
1) Think flipped 90° and nesting boxes
2) think again flipped 90° for a cabinet door that stays closed from the fact of gravity and a premade shelf above cabinet for potential bags of pine shaving etal.
3)cabinet doors for decorative vent doors that you can close or latch open season dependant
4) ___your imagination ___

5) cabinet as exterior nest box-door either on top or end (fold down) for cleaning/eggs

And I was all set to start the yard routine for the year. Now I'm gonna wait til the cold snap passes. I am a little south of I 20 and Dallas, so it is predicting real cold and rain, possibly snow by the week end.
Sounds like your close to my hometown. I miss that area. Need to go home and visit the graveyards, but its a 4 hr drive 1 way, partner won't go, and I don't want to round trip in 1 day OR leave him alone 12-14 hours. So it'll have to wait.
