I'm just north of Kerrville by about 25 minutes. Mom (age 93) lives there, independently. She's in a neighborhood nearly on top of a hill and thankfully ok, almost oblivious to the flood carnage due to her age-related cognitive issues.

I've been kayaking on the Guadalupe for several years now with a gal's group. Most recently June 19th. Just paddling, lunch and hanging out for a few hours each outing. We were set to meet up again in two weeks time....Most all these women and their spouses are in and around Hunt and have riverfront access to the Guadalupe or have property on the river. Some of the women I know lost their homes, one was rescued from her roof. Many others I haven't heard info on yet.

Still trying to get my head around it all. Wondering about all the critters who were lost, too, domestic and wildlife---but certainly not to belittle the loss of human life.

When we were looking to buy some Hill Country property nearly 30 years ago, I told husband that we would NOT be buying lakefront or riverfront property.

I completely understand your empathy with the domestic creatures and the wildlife. Its hard to comprehend nature being so harsh to innocents. It doesn't belittle the loss of human life at all.
I hope your friends are alright and that you will hear from them soon.

Question for the Texas hive mind. Would it be crazy to not collect eggs at all for 4-5 days? I live in Austin and will have a.house sitter for the dogs, but unsure if she'll be okay dealing with the chickens.
Started thinking about hiring a pet sitter to come by and collect eggs once/twice and started thinking that would cost more than the eggs are even worth, since we've only been getting 6-7/day lately.

Worst case scenario, I just chuck a few days worth of eggs into the city compost pickup, right? Will they use another nesting box if it starts getting full or will they be ridiculous and try to keep laying in the same 1-2 boxes until it's overflowing and/or it starts to make a mess?

The biggest issue would be if one or more of the hens starts to pick at the eggs and they realize the eggs are full of deliciousness.

If you have a neighbor you trust you could say they could keep the eggs if they collect them.


Otherwise, composting is good. You could keep the shells, oven bake and grind if you're into keeping eggshell calcium on hand to add to their food (but you probably have oyster grit) but no I wouldn't plan on using the eggs after several days in heat.

Get a muffin pan put a egg or 2 in one muffin slot(feed to dog and 1 a day if 1 dog freeze dry or dehydrate) and grind the eggs shell it's great for gardens or even chicken food.

I have a five year old Black Australorp hen named Percy. I am needing to re-home her as I will no longer have time to take care of her. She is very docile and friendly, and likes to be petted every now and then. She doesn’t make a lot of noise. She is a pet to me - I would really like her to be re-homed in a place where she will be well cared for and will not be used for cruel purposes like eating her.


I wanted to ask if anybody knows someone who is looking for chickens who will take good care of her? I am not able to arrange transportation to take Percy anywhere myself so I would prefer someone who would be able to come to me and take her.

Also, I have tried to post on social media to see if anyone there could take her.

I tried to use Facebook, but Facebook permanently disabled my account because it “did not follow community standards”. What does this mean?


I was thinking about also using Craigslist and/or Nextdoor to post about re-homing Percy.


I wanted to ask if anyone has experience with Craigslist and Nextdoor, and if so could you give me advice on them. I am hesitant to use Craigslist due to safety concerns. I did some research on Nextdoor, and people say that Nextdoor reports users for not following community guidelines. I wanted to ask if this is the case, and what does that mean?

I have no experience with Craigslist or Nextdoor, but good luck rehoming her! I know we have quite a few members in the Austin area. I'm not too far, and I wouldn't be opposed to taking her, but currently I don't have a place for integration as I have chicks and will be getting some bantams in a few weeks.
