Texas

We are located in Jacksonville, Texas 1st house on the right after the darn on lake Jacksonville 200 miles northeast of Houston.
We just started raising chickens and a few ducks now think we have 5 ducks and 31 baby chickens.
On my weekends I am building bigger brooders and now working on a chicken coop and a few tractors.
We have fenced in an area about 16 ft wide by 32 ft long for the chickens and another one 10 ft X 32 ft for the ducks.
We have a pond and hope the ducks will go there rather then cross the street to the big lake.
Only we have a 4 American Bald Eagles around so I don't know how all this will work out using bird netting over the chicken run.
Nice to see more of us Texans here from the Piny Woods.
Oh the wife has 6 cats.
I am also learning to fly so when I have spare time from working I get to work on my plane.

I'm in San Antonio near the Converse, Live Oak, Universal City area. We're considered "county" over here, but are still in San Antonio. We're in a weird little area that doesn't get city water or trash service, but were not rural at all. Like I said, a weird little area...

Hi All,
I'm new on this site, and new to chicks, but learning a lot and loving it!

I'm in Parker, in the shadow of Southfork Ranch, northeast of Dallas, and east of Plano. Any neighbors?

I bought 2 adult layers from a friend's daughter who sells eggs. She let me have one of her RIRs and one of her BRs. They were great, so I ordered 5 Dominiques from the feed store. What they gave me are turning out to be more BRs but that's OK. I also got 2 Ameraucanas and a red-something-or-other, not sure if she's a RIR or a sexlink. Well, those are now 3 months old, and out free-ranging with the two big girls. They are a blast.

Then I got my courage up to order 25 Delawares to put in a tractor out in my pasture, for eating. I've never butchered before, so this will be an adventure, to say the least. Currently, they are 1 week old and are in a rubber stock tank covered with wire on my back porch. I lost one on about day 2, but so far, everyone else looks good. I LOVE my chickens!

Sorry I signed up too late to come to the Texas chicken jamboree, but maybe next year?

I'd also be interested to know if anyone has a good processor in the area - save me the grief, if you know what I mean?

Thanks for all the comaraderie and good info!

Cool, Judymae! I run up to Farmersville from time to time, and I have friends in Celeste and Blue Ridge. I love that area! If it wasn't so far out for my husband's commute to Dallas, I'd think about looking for land up there. This place we got was a bona fide miracle. 4.65 acres about 7 minutes to anywhere you need to go for shopping, etc. We got out of the Plano rat race about 2 years ago and haven't looked back. My first sheep came to the property last August, and my menagerie has snowballed ever since! I like what you say about a verrrrrrry understanding husband - I have one, too!
