We insulated the coops - that's why they are cooler. And the smaller coop has a solar powered exhaust fan.
Wow nice coop, ive been trying to get my dad to put a fan or something in ours cause the hens that are sitting are looking too hot. He thinks the hens should just leave the coop if its too hot.

We went out this morning and put a tarp over part of our chicken yard for my 5 week old chickie's to give them extra shade. It worked great and the chickie's loved the extra shade. Poor lil things we feel sorry for them out there, I'm planning on putting a small rock pond in for them to wade in very shallow.

Finished our coop and run. Big chicks are close to 2 months. Momma sultan's chicks are about 5 wks. I agree this heat really is horrible. I had to put up a tarp, too. We plan on putting metal up on half the run but can't do it til DH gets a day off. I noticed mine prefer the coop except late in the evening. It is the heat for sure. :barnie

Forgot to mention how we constructed the coop and run. We had an old metal shed that lost half the metal because of hurricane Ike. We re installed the metal on the missing sections. The front left section doesn't have a door, it just remains an open space but the whole run is attached to the front of the building. We used hardware cloth on all the sides of the run and 2x4 heavy wire for the top. I didn't have enough hardware cloth to put down 2 ft on the ground. I used 1 ft of concrete and 1 ft of hardware cloth all the way around coop and building. I wish I could have gotten him to make me a door for the coop but with work and the money we had already spent, he wasn't going to budge. So that I could lock them into the coop at night. The run is 14Wx16L and the coop is 14Wx6L. Won't be long and neighbor can get his sultan and her chicks. I don't believe I am going to keep any. DH won't let me have but about 12 chickens and I already have 6. The friendliest out of the bunch are the Ameraucanas/EEs. They will jump into my lap or on my shoulders. :)

We've had so crickets and that the ducks and chicken are eating way way less of the store bought foods... (especially my ducks they might eat a cup of food a day.... maybe most times not even that much!
