Théo and the chickens des Sauches

Sorry for all the stress that you are having.

Light is not out of the woods yet as she started behaving a bit lethargic and not having a good appetite on 7/3 (yesterday). Many people on BYC seem to agree that 1 week after implant, it starts to kick in and will make chicken feel not good. So we are really hoping this is why.

I have found this thread helpful relating to salpingitis and EYP. She also has a successful surgery experience. Apparently two weeks after implant is a good time for surgery because blood vessels have shrunk. Our vet never mentioned anything like this so I believe he does not know.

Manue, did you know plain text and no photos requires less data transmission?

Congrats with the choices Manue!

I am extremely relieved, yes. It's been a terrible week and a horrible campaign, with most of the parties having internal break ups and an incredible number of representatives being physically aggressed while on campaign.
But those who are crowing victory are sadly short sighted. This only happened because of our voting system with two turns and the fact that whenever there where three candidates left for the second turn, all left wing candidates and most of the presidential candidates resigned in favour of the one who could win against the extreme right.
Not only are the people who voted for the extreme right still here, they now feel their election has been confiscated. We have become a divided country like the US.

That said, I cried for joy when I heard the results yesterday and I may have eaten a whole dark chocolate tablet with a few glasses of génépi. Now just hoping the left will not mess things up so that things change for the next presidential election.

What ever happened to moderates and agreeing to disagree. The whole world seems to be polarized and hating the other side.

Some quick chicken news now that I don't have to think about moving to GB anymore 🥴.

The three hens that were sitting, Merle, Léa and Chipie are completely done. Chipie and Léa are beginning to molt ; it's early and I think it may have been triggered by sitting.

Merle has been staying outside with Théo again, which has given him an ego boost ...and led him to pick again a fight with Gaston a few days ago, when both Piou-piou and Merle came back in the chicken yard with Gaston.
I was decided not to interfere to let them sort it out, but at one point Théo made a strange cry and fell on the side with his eyes closed and his head limp. I totally thought he was either dead or dying, so I picked him up and carried him away.
But after about ten minutes he was fine in spite of bleeding a lot and actually wanting to go back to fight !

Is it possible that he pretended dying to stop the fight ?

My partner thinks he was so stressed that he "fainted" (I think there is no consensus on whether chickens actually faint or not).
Anyway now they both want to fight each other. During the day Théo is outside so it's not an issue, but it is in the evening and morning to go in the coop and come out. I don't know if I can actually let them fight it out because there is such a difference in size and weight that Théo doesn't stand a chance, especially as he will not quit.

Nougat had another few days being not well, but she has been better the last three days. She is very stressed and aggressive with the other chickens and the only thing that seem to make her feel happy is getting any "special" food - chards, lambs quarter, peanuts, rice..because she is senior and not so weak now she is never challenged for the food bowl and she keeps it all for her.

At last it feels like summer , today we are up to 30/90 and it should go up the following days. I'm really happy it happened so late because I'm definitely not doing well with the heat. The chickens seem hot, but fine, but I know that it will be hard for some especially Nougat if the heat goes up and lasts for days.

We are finally getting on to doing the hay, we picked the terraces above Sunday and will be doing those below tomorrow. It's hard work as we have to carry it on our backs especially when we have to go up. We had a lot of help on Sunday but tomorrow we will be only four, with the neighbours that come to bale it for their cows. We'll start at 5.30, as soon as there's enough light, so hopefully we may be done at noon. We have to go through the chicken yard so we need to lock them in the run which they won't be happy about.

Pictures in chronological but not logical order.

St John's wort has come back with a vengeance this year. This is in the chicken's yard and they don't touch it. But we do have to sort it out from the hay for the cows and goats.

Poor Nieva is getting to look like a naked neck. I've been trying a few different products, some chemical and some natural and nothing seems to work for her.

The reservation had made a new pedagogical path. It's a short but nice run.

Laure has been having laying issues. She did not lay for three days, laid two abnormally huge eggs and a soft shell one the next day. Hope it's a temporary thing.

Piou-piou is doing great and almost all her feathers have grown, except the primary wing feathers !

This is the "moto faucheuse" (is it a motor mower in English?). My partner's father says it's at least sixty years old. It is totally unsafe by today's standards as it has no security, but it's unbreakable. I'm not allowed to use it 🤣.

Tiny Chipie has a hard time coming back to flock's life. Théo bullies her, Gaston is a bit too amorous, and all the hens attack her with the exception of Merle and Léa that are still afraid of her. She is being quite familiar with us and I've taken up to giving her a ridiculously tiny bowl of egg, rice, almond and peanuts while cleaning the coop in the morning.
