Théo and the chickens des Sauches

🐈 Today I saw a neighbour cat from next door as if he wanted to run and attack something near the chicken run. I distracted him.. he backed off.
When I went outside to see what he was aiming at / up to, I saw another neighbour cat from the other side of our garden. This black cat was entering the run where she likes to hide to catch sparrows.
It was clear he didn’t aim for the chickens but for a rival. 😅
And I was just in time to stop her from hiding inside.
My cat has also taken back to her old habit of hiding in the run. I've been actually a bit scared she would get hurt these past few days ; when most of the 17 chickens all squeeze inside the small run when it's raining, she doesn't have much room to get out !

Cats interacting together, whether playing or fighting, can be scary for the chickens I think.
You have to explain more if you like another opinion. BTW, concrete is not easy to modify if you like to make adjustments later on. So I would probably use bricks or wood.
We know concrete means definitive, but it's the only safe option, since it's impossible to dig to bury the mesh, and we don't have enough space to put cinder bricks and still be able to drive the track barrow down. But this will really be the last version of the run. We are planning to downsize the flock in the future ; getting more pullets helped with the flock dynamic at some point but I feel like with the space we have, around 12 would be better, and also easier for me to watch and care for all of them.

It was raining all day yesterday but my partner really wanted to get on so he finished the covering, as he is not here today.

We have added five meters square of covered space when we had ten, but we left the other side with the small coop /brooder uncovered. The part under the small coop is sheltered, so that leaves about two square meters uncovered where the rain gets in.
The run is small for our number of chicken, but it's actually very rare that we leave them locked up for more than an hour.
Having a second door of chicken size, not right next to where the human door will be, would put an end to bullies stopping other hens from getting in or out, and would also allow Théo to get away from Gaston more easily. My partner isn't enthusiastic because he is scared we will forget to shut it at some point.

Today it's still very grey and damp, but no rain or drizzle so the chickens are out. Yesterday they weren't so keen and Piou-piou and Merle actually stayed on their roost all afternoon.
I found a soft shell egg under the roost this morning with bits of rotten material. From their behaviour and the location it's either Cannelle or Blanche and I think it's Cannelle. I have been wondering since she has not been doing well these last days if she was laying internally. It looks like reproductive infection is striking again as it has for the passed ex-batts. But Cannelle has given me worries several time, once for almost two months, and she always got better so I am not giving up on her.

We are having a bunch of social obligations and some not fun stuff so my posting has and will be not as regular, but it should be over in a few days.

Every morning since we take Piou-piou inside, Théo spends about an hour alone behind the house.

Nougat acted like she was going to lay this morning and this got Chipie in full screaming mode.

Théo and Cannelle had one of those frozen moments. Lasted almost a minute. I think she is saying go away ?

Great works. Give your loving partner a big hug from me.
My partner isn't enthusiastic because he is scared we will forget to shut it at some point.
If you add an automatic chicken door (like the chicken guard) you can’t forget. I love it because it opens at/after sunrise (lumen adjustable) and closes at dawn/dusk.

Silly creature 🤣

A nice day today ! At noon the sun finally came back and shone gloriously all afternoon !
Early morning I went to visit "the baby" as my partner jokingly calls him.. Pied-beau ! The chickens hadn't been fed and let out yet so they were eager to see me and the treats I brought 😁. Pied-beau is doing good, and apparently they have come to an arrangement for coexistence with the three other roosters who also seemed well and not as scared as last time I saw them.

Gaston's son was given two couples of bantams by their neighbour who keeps them free ranging, where I mentioned I saw Chipie's sister : the two hens look just like Chipie. Apparently they all come from a pair of bantams Gaston got about ten year ago. There must have been a lot of interbreeding but those people keep chickens in tough conditions so only the fittest and most clever would survive. People who don't like them say they breed the chickens for fox food. The picture is very blurry but maybe you can see how much they look like Chipie. They will stay in the old sheep barn underneath the house, which is no longer used since Gaston's nephew built a hoop shelter for the sheep, with Gaston's other bantams and the quails.

Then a while after I came back the sun came out and the chickens were very happy. Merle and Cannelle didn't seem very well but all the others sun and dust bathed a good part of the day, and spent the rest of the time carefully watching my partner working.

It seems Piou-piou got her mobility back because she choose the highest, hardest to access hole in the wall to lay, and for once Gaston kept watch while she was laying (she is in the hole above him on the right).

If the parents have such a variety of chicks as you had, I think there is no problem at all. Relatives in chicken flocks are common practice.
Early morning I went to visit "the baby" as my partner jokingly calls him.. Pied-beau !
Such a handsome boy now!

Another lovely winter day, -4/25 in the morning and frozen ground at last, and a beautiful sunshine all day. I think we are due to another three or four beautiful days like this before it turns again.
Piou-piou laid in the crate inside the house this morning. It's the first time, up to now she waited until we brought her out to go in the coop. I guess she is starting to feel safe, even though the cats sleep on a chair right next to the crate (we have a small living room so not much choice where to put the crate). I don't know how long I should keep on bringing her inside like this, as she just eats and sleep when she is in the crate, and she seems completely recovered, but she has so much bare skin i'm worried it's too cold when it's freezing.

Blanche seemed better this morning, but it didn't last. She had a few moments when she looked fine but she slept most of the day.

I think Léa will be laying again soon. She was checking up the nests today and she ate crushed egg shells tonight.

Théo had a good time today because Gaston spent most of the time out in the garden with the younger pullets and he stayed inside the chicken yard flirting with Kara, Lilly, Alba and Nieva. He actually succeeded in mating Kara and Lilly and they both crouched for him though they both ran away and avoided him after.

I got a bit carried away with pictures. I'm trying to get some for the smartphone paparazzi contest but they all seem to come out blurry or out of range or focus 🤣.
