Rest in peace Eda ~ 2018-2024
I thought it was finally time to make a thread dedicated to bringing attention and popularity to a very rare and critically endangered breed of bantam from Germany called the Thüringer Barthühner which I've started calling the Thürigian Bearded Bantam!!! This gorgeous lil bird is Baby Bee! He's the only surviving chick of 6 eggs I got shipped from one of few breeders in Germany! This breed has proven to be one of the most friendly and human loving breeds I've ever kept! They love human affection and are some of the friendliest birds I've ever had!!!
There are several color varieties of Thürigian Bearded Bantam, including Chamois Spangled, Silver Spangled, Gold Duckwing, Barred, White, Black/Blue, and Mahogany Red. The breed is mainly bantam, with Silver Spangled, Black/Blue, White being the only color varieties with standard fowl. For over the past 2 years I've been gaining information from some of the only remaining breeders in Germany dedicated to saving this extraordinary breed! In this thread I'm hoping to bring popularity and awareness to it's decline! They are becoming increasingly rarer and have only been seen in a handful of poultry shows outside of Germany. This breed was also listed as critically endangered by Germany and are indescribably rare outside of Germany and I plan on creating a small breeding flock or two in order to take some hatching eggs to develop a few small breeding flocks in the states!!! I plan on having them in the US as soon as the summer of 2026. However it's possible that it could take until the summer of 2028 depending on how quickly I can get a good flock of hens with an unrelated rooster. Baby Bee will hopefully become the father to a generation of Thürigian Bearded Bantams in the states!!! Once I have good numbers in the states I hope to start selling them to people dedicated to keeping the breed pure! If you have any questions feel free to ask! I'll be documenting the progress of this project in this thread!
