Howdy . Plan for the coop you will want in the future if that's possible. Make it tall enough that you can walk in and clean it without being hunched over. Give them as much floor space as possible within reason.

Hello, and welcome to BYC. As has been stated the birds don't care about 'taller' but it is better for you. Build far bigger than you think you need as these birds are addictive and chicken math is a real thing.

Hi Thanks everyone! I'm converting a rabbit hutch into a small coop. It's 8sq ft. (4'x2') I figure if I go with bantams and enclose the hutch all the way down to the bottom to make it taller I can have more space for roosts.

So, if your coop is (4x2) or a total of 8sq ft.
Than, just because your getting Batums, doesn't change the 4 sq ft minimum for each bird Esp. If your keeping them inside. If so, than 5sq ft per Bantum is needed....with Chicken math, you are only housing two (2) chickens with 4 sq ft each.
Or is my chicken math incorrect?
Its ALWAYS better to have at Least 3 chickens minimum and 4 is better no matter the breed.

But, your coop dimensions are for only 2 Bantum chickens 8f they are staying inside.
Look at it this way.
You want to give them as much space as possible. This keeps the Bullying down, the pecking n feather pulling down.
Not everyone gets along all the time. Dogs fight and even humans fight if kept in small quarters. So, do yourself a favor now and give as much space as possible.
You will not be sorry later.
