Thank you all so much for the advice on getting my hens out of their nesting boxes at night. It only took 3 days of putting basketballs in their nest at night to discourage them from sleeping in there. No more dirty eggs, well other than mud from all the rain. I have learned so much from this site! Thanks again!!

I just found this thread and we got new nest boxes and put them up Friday (yippee, I love them) - previously laying on floor in corner -- behind the crate I put up for them to lay in.

I have gone in both nights as dusk really fell to night and removed a few bantums from roosting on perch in front of nest boxes, but am worried they would try to sleep in them. The bigger girls don't seem to care unless it is time to lay. They are surprisingly docile when trying to sleep -- I have read that but had no reason so far to handle them at night until now.

Anyway, will remember the ball trick if it continues to be an issue. Thanks:thumbsup
