I am dying to candle again! I did a few days ago and it was just amazing to see them moving around. I am forcing myself to wait until Monday when I am set to go into lockdown. I can't stand it. It's killing me!!! I am already trying to pick what to hatch next. What's wrong with me?

Ahhh Julie, that is so wonderful. I think they are perfect.

A1--good luck and good hatch to you.

Nosey Chickens-- what's wrong with you is you are ADDICTED! To hatching. It just creeps up on you. I can hardly crack an egg without wondering what it would have looked like LOL. But it is sooo fun. And it gets even better when you start planning on whom to breed to whom to improve the breed...

Good luck everyone!

I kicked out 2 serama eggs, 1 silkie, and 1 duck egg last night after candling. I'm iffy on a few others, but they can ride along for now. I'm not big on getting rid of eggs that might possibly in the furthest reach of imagination think about hatching. So I'm officially locked down. I've got the big utility sponge in there and all the eggs are in my camping cartons. The turners I moved to the LG are playing havoc with my temps though. Or my thermometer is messed up. It read 112 yesterday (the highest ever) but I put my hand in and no way was it that high. So I turned the temp down a little bit and took the thermometer probe out until it equalized. Put it back and had to turn the temp back up a tiny bit. So, I don't think it ever was 112 in there. Just my thermometer went a little crazy.

So most of us are locking down today and tomorrow right? Plan on locking down tomorrow myself after one last candling.

OH BOY! I have 36 babies this morning. First time ever for a 95% hatch rate. This new Sportsman is the thing! We took them out this morning and only had 2 that didn't hatch. When I left for church then work they were all just fine. Hopefully they will be good late tonight when I return. There were 10 austrolorps and rest are designer from RIR, leghorn, white rock, EE, buff, etc. All appeared healthy. Will post pics tomorrow when have time to actually make some.

Put more in hatcher to hatch mid week. These are dominiques and can't wait for them to hatch. We also added some more of our eggs which will be our last bunch for a while (black austrolorp, buff orpinton, delaware). So, dominiques on Wed., heritage RIR next Monday, SLW next Thursday, and the ones we put in today down the road. Should be around 100 chicks altogether. What in the world to do with them this winter??? That will make me have between 150-175 chickens when this is over. This old girl has got to sit down and make a plan to downsize! I love to hatch. Only if I can find a market for them this spring.

It's probably lonely and trying to encourage the rest to hatch.

I made a bad mistake this time around, myself. I found an OEGB egg in an unlikely place in my laundry room. It was old and not very clean. I didn't want to put it in the fridge, so my choices where either to try to hatch it or to throw it out. So I put it in the incubator. I *never* expected that little one to hatch. He did last week. While I'm happy to have my little silver chick, the poor thing is having to sleep in a plastic Critter Keeper in the brooder at night. He's so much smaller than my other chicks that it would be dangerous to let him sleep with them. He'd get crushed. During the day, I let him run around with them, with some trepidation.

If I can get him through to Thursday, I'm going to put him in the brooder with any new babies I get.
