Jen4, that baby is from the egg that wasn't going to hatch. I found him in the corner in my laundry room in a make shift nest made of drier lint that the hen dug out of my trash can. The egg was between one and two weeks old. The air cell was already big. It was not in the cleanest of environments. I took the egg in and candled. The shell was very porous. All those are very bad signs to start with
I didn't want to throw the egg out, but I didn't want to put it in the fridge either (it was awfully close to Here Kitty Kitty's litter box). I put the egg in the incubator. It went in about the same time the duck eggs did. It was probably the only time I was slightly dismayed to see a chick forming, since I knew he'd have no playmates for at least a week. I joined the "Pre Thanksgiving Hatch" and in the last three days, moved him into the Little Giant with the leghorns which were too late arriving for this hatch. I did not, strictly speaking, lock down. He hatched anyway and is a perfect little love. He mixes with the youngest older chicks during the day and goes into a plastic Kritter Keeper at night.
