That AH Phelps is at it again.

I heard they were trying to get an emergency law passed for the funeral of the 9 year old girl. That stuff goes slow though. Phelps will probably get some kind of hold put on her funeral while they decide the legalities issue.

I don't know what I would do if I was a direct relative of someone who's funeral they were protesting at. They are fully within their legal right to do so. If someone did something to them they would probably go to jail. It's what we have to endure to keep our freedom of speech though.

The scary thing is that they actually get money from someone to do this stuff. Like Royd said "Where are they getting their money for all the travel"?

I am a baptist deacons wife... those nuts are not upholding any Christian, Biblical premise and I shudder to think whats going to happen when they have to answer for what they are doing and teaching. Please don't think that ANY true, God fearing Christian church teaches the unmitigated pooey they are spreading.

I don't believe it for a second. I know that 99.9% of any kind of religious folk are absolutely horrified by this guy. It's too bad that people like him and his followers give black eyes to good people.

Agreed. They're just giving good religious people a bad name. Its a shame what they are doing...

They are lawyers and just looking for any excuse to sue for infringements of their rights. That is how they get their money.

They were planning a protest here in Johnson City not too long ago. It was pretty much a non event. They aren't too familiar with some of the hill folk around here and I'm quite surprised that they made it out without any casualties. People from some areas around here are very close knit. You mess with one and you're messing with more than you bargained for.

I'm a strong proponent of free speech and freedom of assembly. But when you exercise that right with the explicit intent to cause emotional harm to others then you are blurring a line that should be pretty clear.

I can say that when my son was deployed in Iraq I was firmly resolved to make any protesters of his funeral have a much worse day than I was having.

I don't think they are lawyers. Just very misguided bigots. They are wrapping themselves in the American Flag while doing it. makes me sick.
I'm sure the ACLU would defend them though. They are fully within their rights after all. We still have a few things to work out when it comes to the 1st amendment. It's just wrong.

Actually the eldest daughter is an attorney. She has presented for the family in several cases. There is a serious case with them coming up regarding freedom of speech. I hate what these people are doing, but they have the right to say what they want. So I joined the Patriot Guard.

They can say what they want right behind me and a whole line of other people who make sure the families of the soldiers never even see or hear them. Have been to a number of soldier's funerals and it never stops moving me to tears.

Not only to see the grief of the family, but to see dozens of people standing with me in a line (one funeral it was 25 degrees and raining - no one moved.) protecting both things we value - freedom of speech and the families we love. Doesn't get much better than that.

People like Phelps serve a valuable purpose in helping the rest of us decide what it is we really value.

They did pass an emergency law but it is that you can't protest within 300 feet (I believe) for a funeral. It doesn't bar them completely. They can still protest, it's just how close they can get.
