x2 It definitely helps prevent infestations, but using it to cure current ones is tedious at best. It takes FOREVER. Your girls are much better off with a permethrin based product or something similar. I use permethrin spray because I find it easier to apply and more stays on the birds. After you dust them they usually shake off and you can just see all that dust you paid for flying away in the wind. Drives me crazy. Also, make sure they have plenty of access to dirt so they can dust bathe. I find that every time I have a chicken in a tractor and don't supply them with some place to dust bathe they get mites. Even a kitty little box full of DE is fine. They will prevent mites for you if you give them access to dirt. My free ranging flock has not ever *knock on wood* gotten an infestation and I attribute that to them always having access to lots of dirt.DE *might* help prevent infestations, but it won't kill current ones.
