I know people dont help chicks out of the eggs and I know better, BUT I had a bad hatch this time ( new homebuilt bator) and only had 24 out of 124 hatch. Well I was going to clean out the hatcher today and make room for the next 124, But nnnooooo 1 decided to pip and it took it all day. it was almost out backwards. like his butt was stcking out of the egg. It was like that for 12 hrs so I decided to help... BAD IDEA the poor thing is curved like a slippery road sign and its feet are closed and curved under.. Now I feel bad cause hes in there PEEP PEEP PEEP .. I really dont think it will make it... should I cull him to end its misery?? or see if he straightens out??? I think I had a low temp like 94-95 incubation would this cause deformities and a bad hatch?

awww so sorry!

1\\2 in 1\\2 out of the shell for way long time will cause what you describe. If your temp was that low, I think you would have had a lot longer than normal incubation period than expected. I know too hot will cause deformities, crossed beak, curled feet and such. I would guess yours is just took too long coming out. Sorry to say, but I usually cull these with a few hrs.... Bill

Low Humidity Not So Much Temp Is What Causes These Sort Of Problems... I Would Give Him Some Time To Straiten Out But Its Very Likely It Will Be Too Crippled To Make It

Nope he didnt make it he was gettin around pretty good but I was sure he wouldnt make it. His couple of days was spent with his brothers, died this morning.. so humidity too low JJ? I try to keep it at 30-35% and then up to 50-55% at lockdown. that has been working really good in my 1st homade bator. But this water fridge cooler on I made was a little on the low side for the 1st 10 days. I thought it was right but droped to 20-25% and 94-95* but now I have 2 accurite temp/hygros and there both different (go figure) one is 35% the other 39% and Im at 102 on one and 99 on another, and the temp egg I made is at 99* so Im gonna try that for the next 2 hatches then Im gona take a break till after I get back from Gatlinburg. woo hoo VACATION!!!

Sounds like low humidity during hatch. 55% should be okay but that really depends on a lot of factors, the least of which is the accuracy of your hygrometer. Plus if the bator is forced air (fan) and the egg was pipped for a long time that could also make the chick have trouble hatching.

If it's almost out that shouldn't hurt much because it already broke the membrane. But if it is just pipped that could be a big problem. Especially with low humidity.

Which is why I said 'pipped', not zipped
