Let me tell you a story ,
you can read this or dismiss it , your choice.
A few weeks ago , some one called rescue on me. there were other factors involved but the point here is:

rescue comes in , sees little to no issue, so they call in the State Vet from the AG dept.
they visit and after chatting with them for an hour the boil down was there was no serious infractions BUT!

Cleaning my rabbit cages and chicken coop wasnt being done nearly enough.
seems cleaning, raking, putting down new bedding once a week is a no no. it should be done every day with25 chickens,They also claimed the coop wasnt big enough, the cop is 14x 24x8ft tall. I can park 2 full size pickup in the coop unoccupied and still have room to move around them.

rabbit cages need to be thoroughly cleaned every day , not spot cleaned daily and a weekly clean out with a pressure washer.

Yep surely we need more Official people stepping in and making sure we do not get into the habit of being too comfortable owning animals.

Highlander, good on you for giving the chickens a new home.
Your efforts are more than what most people give lip service to.

Yeah, they haven't been near the roosts, they just all huddle together in a group in a corner. I was prepared for that. I don't think I'll see any eggs for a while from them.

See told you, you had done the right thing, ex-battery hens are so very loving and win your heart everytime, mine have never roosted and still huddle on the floor everynight.... but they did start to lay within days. Keep it up they reward you so much with love, I always get a kick out of how they literally run and throw themselves at you each time they see you. Now your hooked Highlander.

Totally understand how you wanted to cry when you first get them, it is so very sad and wrong that any bird is kept in battery conditions, but as you say lots of TLC bring many rewards, especially when their feathers start t come back.....

BRAVO YOU !!!!

Highlander, Mr. Highlander needs to tell his side of the story!

WTG!!!!
I was startled that they were RIR's. I know you can buy brown eggs in the store and people actually think because they are brown, somehow they live all their happy little lives on Sunnybrooke Farm, USA. The public should be aware.
I think they should have hen cams, cow cams and pig cams on every farm in the USA that provides food for humans. Things might change.
