I always hatch in cartons. I get better hatch rates without the chicks playing soccer with the eggs. I use paper cartons and don't cut the bottoms out. (it contains the mess) You will need to work a bit more initially to get the humidity up, but once you do, it's no different.
I hatch in cartons too because I found that I had a better hatch rate. Tried both ways several times on the same hatch and found the cartons to work better for me with my little mini experiments. Just my opinion

I want to join.  was no where close to the amount of eggs guessed last year....  My guess is 9063 set.
love the coffee cup.  But I really like the picture of the hen on the wall.   did you paint it.
now I have try to catch up on reading the posts

No, I didn't, but I bet I could paint a good picture! That picture was part of a # of things to set the stage for a photo shoot. Just had 2 levels of our house completely gutted & redecorated. We were able to purchase some of the items they brought. It was so neat!

So I am procrastinating letting my chickens out! When I was locking everyone up last night we had a visitor in the trees above. First one I have seen since we moved here, and of course it was 5 pm and the hippy neighbors come driving down their driveway and story ends here.

I will be so upset if I loose a bird to it! I was so torn on the open run idea, I always had chickens in enclosed runs and soooo wanted a huge area for them to wonder so I made a bigger run in the woods and left the top open.

Sally I have the same problem here, I want to make a bigger run which will include some of the woods but really don't know how I'll be able to protect them from above. Neighbors dogs will have a fence blocking them (I'm home all day so I should hear if there's trouble).

i accidently googled silver phoenix chickens.. i headed out in a few minutes to set up another coop

When I was having my hawk problem, I started one called Relentless Hawk....Help!. The feedback was mostly helpful and positive, but there were a few pretty nasty folks, who didn't appreciate any form of hawk control other than penning the chickens. I had to block one of them , I was getting so upset. Seems like such a simple discussion topic, but, SOME PEOPLE! Geesh!

Quote: in this snow? Ain't nobody running, more like wading. i was going to wade out and set up another coop...just like that! slap a few pieces of plywood together.. it would end up like the coop in this one chicken information movies that with every gust of wind something on it fell off. i think its time for a new coop
