The 4th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long

My SO tells me I have a problem,

I have a barn that is 8x12 ft or 96 sq ft total. We started out last year with 12 laying hens, 50+ meat birds, and 6 ducks. over the summer 2 of the laying hens went missing, one of the meat birds never grew and the ducks quacked. Te have 11 chickens and 6 ducks currently.

Earlier this year we decided to order 15 turkeys, 5sq ft each = 75 sq ft - they will fit in the barn right?

Then he bought me an incubator for my birthday!
Now we are hatching out potentially 28 ducks with this hatch-a-long = is that 84 sq ft (3sq ft each)
I'm also hatching potentially 12 chickens = 24 sq ft (2 sq ft each)

After this hatch I have another 24 chickens in mind to hatch = 48sq ft
and we are getting more meat birds this year (50) = 100sq ft

They all free range during the day on 5 acres, the SO thinks we are going to have a problem with barn space - I don't see it! do any of you? hehe

Is that the red bulb? Did you give them any other light during the day or was it just the red one day and night?

They've got four fake eggs in the nest box and they're both laying an egg each daily. Funny to say this, but I've never been so aggravated at getting eggs!

Maybe I should show them pictures of cute chicks...
No we didnt use the red bulbs. We used the regular white light. They had it 24/7.

I dont know if showing them pics of chicks will help or not

Phew! Just got caught up. Candled today - day 10. From 20 eggs I chucked 6 total. I have 14 left & of those, 3 had blood rings at day 7. Glad I kept them in because they show life! Blood rings don't necessarily mean they're dead. Only if there's no veining with them by day 10. I had one infertile, 2 dead embryos & 3 blood rings with very wee dead embryos. This is my second try at incubating & I've gotten better at candling. Nice to know I didn't toss any live ones this time.

I love the baby goat pics!!!

How big are your embryos? I just candled and my embryos still look the same size as day 7.
New baby goats tonight!! Mama is Saanen, dad is a nubian.. Twins, a boy and a girl..

I think he's one of the prettiest turkeys I've seen. And, I'm not a turkey fan for looks in those big guys, but he is handsome. He looks like he has a red bow tie on. :))

I agree!

Sorry, no summary from me here... I just can't believe we are HALF WAY THERE!!!

11 days and I will have baby chickens running all over the brooder!!!!

I know! I can't wait!

Good morning

Woke up to another wintery day. Kids have no school, I have no work today, so its a chore day.

Beautiful!

We had tornados here in DeKalb county Alabama yesterday. We were out of power all afternoon and night and my incubator with 20 cream legbars and 14 sulmtalers were at 72F degrees by the time power was restored despite being wrapped in quilt. My parents had some damage at their house and I will go up this morning to clean up for them.

I am sorry. I will keep you in my prayers.

Yay my EE laid her first egg today! she is my favorite chicken so I am tempted to incubate it but I should probably wait until this batch of eggs hatches before I start any new ones lol

Chickenpooplady, my embryos aren't that big. About 1/4 inch, if that? I've got some Dorkings in there, so I'm not surprised to get some early quitters. Dorkings have a lethal gene, so I lose about 1/4 of their eggs early on. 14 eggs left have dancing embryos so far.....
