I have been reading off and on throughout the last few pages I haven't posted on, trying to keep up.

Just thought I would update, tomorrow is lock down day for me, I will do a quick candling. I plan to mark the ones I see movement in and ones that I'm not sure about, Lay them on their sides on shelf liner. Wish me Luck! :) I will keep updating. We have been taking advantage of the last two nicer days we are going to have for a while and getting some work done outside and in! FINALLY, got our new counter top put on I had been waiting on, YAY more counter space! lol We have a small kitchen. ehh

Hope everyone has a nice rest of the evening and good day tomorrow!! :D

Ok, here is my Day 14 candling report... It turned out pretty much as I expected, I ended up with quite a few clears from the main coop with the 2 yr old Delaware rooster. I think it was just too cold and too early in the spring, plus he had 32 hens to get around to. The Easter Eggers are doing GREAT, only 1 clear out of 18, and one blood ring

. I saw several moving embryos in the others.

Here is the breakdown...

From 16 Delaware Eggs - 3 ALIVE, 1 possible quitter, 12 tossed as obvious clears

From 18 Easter Eggers - 13 definitely ALIVE, 3 slightly ? but I think are alive, and 1 Blood ring (very early death), and 1 clear

From 2 EE/BlueCopperMarans - Both definitely ALIVE!!!

From 10 misc Delaware X - 9 clears and 1 ALIVE (this is a Delaware roo over Red Star hen)

Total - 23 culled, 4 questionable but left for now, and 19 ALIVE!!!

4 days till Lockdown!!!!

Question - Anyone know if there would be a problem in feeding the culled clear eggs to our dogs after hardboiling them? My sister uses hardboiled eggs in the raw meat dog food she makes for our dogs, and she would like to make use of these if possible.

I almost had a loss this week but fortunately she is doing well now. Is it okay to post pics? Some could be graphic to some people. It was an accident that the vet said happens rarely when the rooster breeds the hens. He cut her with his spur and each time he bred her he kept cutting her. It had made it all the way to her air sac before I found it and the only reason/way I found it was when I went to put a saddle on her because her back was looking bald. It was horrible. She will be isolated from the flock (we have a small medic house) and be on antibiotics for 14 days.

This is PS after surgery & you can't see the stitches.

Is it okay to post pics of the stitches or would it be better to make a folder on my profile if people wanted to see?

Yes it was bad but she is doing much better and actually laid an egg for the first time since Mon. or Tues.

I need some advice. Since today is day 14 it seems that many eggs can be sorted out? How can you tell if an egg is a quitter? I was able to easily determine the clear eggs even in the darker shells. I have seem movement in some but I have also read that the chick may not be moving. So how do you determine if a viable egg has died? Jill
I would say that if you are not sure to keep it in. Unless it is smelly or weeping. Looks like bits of brownish yellowish sap on the egg. I've had eggs where there was no discernable movement for days and they hatched. Good luck with your hatch!
