If you read a bit about hatching Silkies..it seems they like the first 48 hours a bit warmer than normal. It has to do with the exchange of carbons and other things. I think they say to put them on 102. Leave the plugs in, (turn the fan off) and make it have less air flow. Than turn them down to 99.5. and make your incubator exchange air.(turn the fan on) I of course read tons and tons of information after I bought my second set of Silkie eggs and did not do so well hatching. I am hoping the additional information I have read really helps me if I try to hatch more Silkies.
I usually have a pretty good hatch..but those Silkie eggs are so difficult. I am a bit cautious to try again.

Some pix:
My hens were Blue Andalusian & Brown Leghorn under an EE roo (which are the blue/silver chicks & the chipmunk chicks respectively).
Also I had some BCM eggs, I got the hens off Craigslist so the babies may be pure (he has BCM roo) but he also had a Salmon Faverolles roo, so don't really know who the daddy is. They are the black chicks and the 2 golden chicks in the pix.
There is also one EE (chipmunk) in there.

I just realized the bcm chicks are not in those pix (only 1 is). The rest must have been in the incubator when I took it. I'll take more pix later when the welsumers dries up. :)
Going back to bed now.

yay! this little guy was hatched this morning. no action from the remaining eggs but i at least have hope now

I set 18 eggs and had none hatch. When I put the eggs into the "hatcher" incubator that I just hatched chicks out of 2 weeks prior, the temp control was moved and we had a temp spike. I thought that it could only have been a short time but apparently it was long enough. I opened the eggs and no survivors. Sad day for us. My kids were really hoping for some peeping today.

I only had three hatch.. but they are very cute!! NONE of my shipped eggs hatched.. I did all the tests this morning and did the final Pipping for them.... three that were in lockdown had pipped internally, but never progressed after that. I wish I had read about the "saddle air sac" BEFORE today... i may have been able to save them. Little sad.. but it was my first time and now I know. Shipped eggs with saddled air sacs need more attention than what I gave them.

here are my three babies! they are silkie showgirl, silkie/cochin roo mix.... one of them is particularly adorable with her little yellow muff. After reading everything again.. i don't think I had my humidity high enough. Two of these little guys had sticky chick.. i am still trying to was off the cement on their backs!

love thier toes!!

I can't help it! I love the sound of chirping chicks. I can lay in bed and fall asleep to the sound. Sweet little baby things anyway!

Good night all........

o your chicks are in your bedroom too!! Boy there was a lot of cheeping going on last night. There was a lightening storm here in California last nightlite up the skies . And big booms for 2 hours. <My dogs and horse hate those kind of storms.
Anyway still hatching in the bator babies are still popping out. 6:45 am. Think I found a good humiditly spot for this time.

My final count was 3 SFH, 9 OE/EE and my one sweet little bantam SL Cochin.

400

I have another group in lockdown today, too :)
