The 4th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long

I have an 8x8 area in my coop that I can close off from the rest of the flock. That is where I put my babies after they outgrow their brooder in the garage. I use the box and light in that area but they spend most of their time running the rest of the space. They go into the warm box to nap during the day and to sleep at night. If I weren't so cheap, I would buy one of those ceramic bulbs that just puts out heat, not light. One day, I am going to buy one of those Ecoglo's.

So I noticed that the momma hen who went broody under a wheelbarrow and scared the heck out of me one day when she showed up with her two babies (on jan. 7th) had no interest in the one chick that is still alive. I hadnt seen them with each other in awhile. And tonight when I went down to do the chickens, I saw Fluffy and Frieda (my two crippled hens) had adopted her!! she was under Frieda but fluffy was trying to get her under her wing too!!! when the chick tried to come out to see what we were doing frieda shoved her back under her wing.

i got a picture but I am going to go watch a movie then download it later.

I'm way behind but may catch up to the pic yet!

So excited! I have SFH and bantam lemon blue sport Cochin eggs coming this week!

So my broody I mentioned earlier is still definitely broody She is young so I hope she does well(she is about 8 months old) This is her first time hatching eggs. I took 3 infertile eggs out from under her last night that she has been sitting on for about 4 days and this morning placed 6 what I hope are fertile eggs from my own flock(limping rooster equals probably not too many fertile chickens). She was up stretching eating and drinking and when she returned to her nest looked at the eggs tapped one and then gently rolled it out of her nest. She tried to roll out a second egg but ended up keeping it. Any reason to why she would remove an egg? I tried to put it back in her nest and will go check on her shortly to see if she kept it.

Ok cool. I have been lowering the temp. But I have been bad at night I cut a lamp on for them because it gas got down so chilly here.thanks for all the info. You guys are great!

incubator checked, temp remaining constant, humidity okay - I am ready!! hatching light sussex, BBS marans and some Birchen Cochin silkie over black silkie mix. fingers crossed!!

I just put my 6 - 5 1/2 week olds in my 4 X 8 grow out coop yesterday. Temps @ -10 C. I have 2 250 watt red heat lamps & 1 halogen 125 watt white flood lite. All suspended about 2 - 3ft from floor. It's freezing outside! -16 C with the windchill. Got one more night of really low temps, so I'm hoping I can turn off the white lite at night tomorrow. I couldn't wait any longer, as their basement brooder was falling apart & they were taking over my basement. Ewwww, nasty! Just bleached the linoleum floor in there.
Will have a new, proper brooder built next month. Thank goodness!

That's a SLW I assume. I hope my hatchery bird gets somewhere close to that but I have my doubts.
