Morning everyone - update on the broody - we have 5 little ones this morning... 2 black ones, a gray one, a stripy (as my niece calls it) and a yellow one! They sre all sooo cute... the yellow one has "stuff" stuck to her. like egg pieces and possibly a bit of yuk.... do i leave it? or do i have to wash it off... doesn't seem to be bothering it.... but the chick itself doesn't look at strong as the others

i have had a few with yolk ....a few have absorbed it ok ....i have a couple that are taking their time......i am not real sure what to do about it but i think you just wait till it absorbs it
this is my first hatch so i am sure there are someone that has more knowledge on this.

i have had a few with yolk ....a few have absorbed it ok ....i have a couple that are taking their time......i am not real sure what to do about it but i think you just wait till it absorbs it this is my first hatch so i am sure there are someone that has more knowledge on this.

Yep! Give him time. He'll rest up & absorb it eventually. No worries!

So I candled my eggs. Out of 6 only 2 are developing.
I have 2 broody silkies and I'm thinking of giving them an egg each. I don't know if they would be able to raise ducks though? Another reason I want to give them the eggs is that when the babies will be 3 weeks old I have to leave the state for a week. So do you think my momma silkies can handle ducks??

I dont know why not. My Bantam Cochins raised ducklings. and I've had my Call ducks raise chicks.

Yay! I'll set them up in my garage this evening then. I know they can raise chicks, so this will be a different experience for them.

That sucks! My Barred Cochins eggs got a good scrambling also, which I found out at last nights candling. Pretty sure the yolk shouldn't sink when upright, and it shouldn't look like a snowglobe either.

My broody abandoned ship on day 3 so I am officially out of this hatch along too. But I am still living vicariously through all you hatchers

I have cleared 10 roos from my big pen..... scary huh! They were starting to harass the ladies. Kept 2 (in addition to the orps and hrir boys in the other pens) ... so how many chickens can I add??? LOL.

This sucks too. Hate to say it but, you 2 are making me feel a little better, cause I thought I had it bad. At least I have some with veining, just not the Cochins.(I almost think there is some reason I'm not supposed to have them, just never seems to happen).

i have 44 in the bators still. one bator lost power for 6 hrs so it may endure more casualties. the swedish flower hens and salmon favs are doing great in the other bator.
