Just candled...
4/4 OEs,
4/4 Wheaten Ameracaunas,
?/4 Marans (The shells are tooooo dark!) But they seemed pretty opaque,

The following are all roostered by a California White roo:
2/3 Plymouth Rock (One is very porous and difficult to see, but it seemed generally transparant... will candle again in a few weeks),
2/2 Rhode Island Red,
4/5 Mystery Moms (One was not fertilized)...

So, to sum it up, I got rid of one that never developed, am unsure about one, and can't see the Marans.

The clear egg.

One of the developing eggs.

Here is photo of my eggs set. a combo of poultry:

left to right---
4 easter eggers and 1 buff orpington
4 black sexlinks ( OE's)
5 muscovy duck,
11 black copper marans and

9 ANd SPeckled Sussex

= 34 eggs

.

So sorry. I have a D'Uccle roo that's been limping for a long time, and I can't figure out what's wrong with him. This is making me think I should find someone to cull him.

IT!!

Have you checked for bumblefoot? Is the leg swollen? If it's been going on for so long then maybe he's learned to live with it.
Not a reason to cull I would think.

Hey guys I had a chick hatch about 3 hrs ago and he's sitting on his bum and scoots, legs are stretched out before him and his abdomen is slightly swollen, his hatch buddy Is up and running and his belly feels fine. There's no yolk showing or anything on this little guy. Its odd to me. :/

Happy Chooks, so sorry about your roo

Poor guy. I'm glad that you caught sight of the problem and put him down, though. I'm amazed at how much pain animals can take and still act like they're okay. Makes me fret whenever something seems even slightly wrong with my animals.

Hello my name is Amy and I have a chicken addiction!
My 2 youngest are 15 & 17. I am feeling emptynest big time but filling it with chickens. In the last 30 days I have hatched 13 chicks, bought 13 EE chicks, 6 Cochin chicks and have 33 eggs for the hatchalong. Today at atwoods a local farm store I bought 6 golden comet chicks (I buy these every year for my layer flock they lay huge eggs. ) then at our local auction tonight I came home with 4 lf Cochins. All this ontop of the 30 some adult birds I have already.

No idea.  He somehow broke it.
I have had chickens recover from a limp.  It's different when they cannot put any weight on the leg and spend all their time laying down.  You just know when it's bad and they are not going to heal from it.

So true.  I'm so sorry.  That had to make you sad for him when you saw how bad it was.

Thanks everyone.

Yes, i was very surprised when i saw his bare leg. I feel bad that I didn't see it sooner, but I probably still wouldn't have known the break was that bad. Putting him down was not easy, but it is certainly better than having him suffer.

Oz -
Thanks for the fantastic charts about the ducks! Really helpful for those new to ducks like me!

I'm so sorry about your Roo :( !!
It's good you caught it before any suffering could be done, I know it had/has to make you feel bad but I think you did the right thing.
Please tell me it gets a tiny but easier as time goes on. I know having chickens meaning having to accept life and death a little differently than havin some other animals as pets but I just get so easily attached.

Whew! I think you define 'chicken addiction'! Lol I have been eyeing EEs too and the Cochins are so pretty :) I might be signing the crazy list before to long I'm afraid.

I just candled the eggs and got to see little chickies moving around.

My EE eggs have shells that are way too thick to candle, so no idea what is going on in them. But was able to candle the eggs from my Maran and the Ameraucana & Maran eggs that I bought.

Very exciting.
