The 4th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long

I candled this AM, 4 chicken, 1 duck all have growth. Had to spin them to find the embreo but all have eme . But as for the air pocket either I am blind or my lamp is preventing me from seeing them. I haven't been paying much attention to the humidty as this is my first hatch and I am trying to go the least effort method . If I fail misserable I know why. Here are some pic's of my "Gathering stage" I figured I'd use these frames as flooring or clading A grocery store is remodeling and I've been dumpster diving. After I remove the hardware I can use these for multiple applications, wish I had more of em.

Wow! You have done a heck of a job 'gathering'! I've been so tempted to do this for different littler projects and heck I see them sitting outside everywhere and they tempt me however, just don't want to put the the in. How large of a coop do you plan to build?

EEEEEE!!! I just checked 4/7 of the eggs under my broody. Two are almost completely dark and moving!! Sorry I can't help shouting!

Good Saint Paddys' day to all.................
I haven't had much luck checking my eggs ...EE ..they are too thick
and I haven't the best light to check with...decided the best idea was to let nature
do its thing and have a surprise at hatch time.....I usually only check my goose eggs as they
are much easier to view....
On a different note.....my canary has hatched her clutch ( due on 17 but, came on 16th)
Thought I'd have wee paddy day babes......interesting to sit here (cage in computer room) and
watch momma being fed by dad and then she feeds young......much less work for me....
Well in two weeks I'll be doing the momma duties if all goes well with my hatch........

Oh how cute! I love canaries! I usually have one in my house. Have had for years. Lost my little guy last fall, can't remember how long I've had him, it was many years. I just haven't gone to find me another one. I need a canary!! Now I'll be looking.

Congratulations on your new babies.

Two of my other hobbies, raising finches & dart frogs. For the frogs I have to culture fruit flies and because of them the finches score! When I have nestlings, I'll coat some ff's in vitamin powder, put them into a small cup, snap on the lid and pop them into the freezer. Ten minutes later I can pour them into a treat cup and put them in with the finches (green singers & gouldians), they have fresh "meat" for their babies. They love them and the babies thrive on them.

I think I am the only person in thie Hatch-a-long who just sets eggs and waits till they hatch. Yes, in an incubator. Brinsea Octagon20 Advance EX - set 'em and forget 'em. I check the incubator displays, passively notice how the humidity pump is doing; am I hearing it occasionally or too frequently? What hatches, hatches. What doesn't, well, I didn't have those chicks before so they're not really a loss. I have spent money on other endeavors which haven't
been all that good for me, so I really don't mind "losing money" on eggs I bought that didn't hatch.

Now, once any chicks hatch, well, then I am obsessed with the fuzzy butts and their care.

Ok so I guess my daughter is serious she called the feed store and they are taking chick and duck orders through next wk!!
She wants ducks!!! Lol all you guys pics of ducks has her dying to have ducks and since we have a huge pond behind our house I guess they may like that too! Which breed would be best ?

Cayugas! Get Cayuga ducklings! They are considered "meat" ducks, so they're larger than medium ducks. They're gorgeous and one of the more quiet breeds.

I'm getting a Brinsea Octagon 20 Eco in a few days (It's currently in MN waiting to be shipped down here). I take it you like your Brinsea? Mine is the manual turn model. I am excited to get it.

afternoon all!

candled yesterday with a Friend of mine who had never seen veining... it was exciting to watch her reactions... I have a few that i think are clear... i assume they need to come out or can do i leave it and keep fingers crossed...? (okay.. so I know they are clear... why do i not trust myself....?)

I left my clear one in an additional 3-4 days and checked it again just to be sure. At that point, I checked another set at the same time for reference and could tell it was really not going to do anything so I took it out. If you don't take it out, you risk it bursting and potentially contaminating the whole lot. At about 10 days, it's very obvious if it's got anything going on.

Candled the eggs under my broody last night, and 12 out of 14 are fertile and developing .

I am thinking, that because she loves to sit, rather than raise, that I might take the chicks off her, and see if she'll one more clutch for me......... but is that bad for her? She has raised chicks in the past, but usually only will do it for 2 weeks or so then she abandons them to sit again....
