don't know if they want me to be talking about them by name? just cause they shipped the wrong chicks and all and now i am doubting what chicks they did sends breed. I just don't want to cause waves ya know?

I was going to change my guess to Rhodebar but they look like bielefelders also hmmm toughy they all kinda look the same legbars included. only subtle differences.

11. They're doing great, it's the Barred Cochins that really took a hit. I only have 3 of 15 left

Tomorrow is lock-down for the first round of my staggered hatch. I have decided to take out some trays on my turner and put in a barrier so the chicks don't get tangled in it and hatch them in there with the eggs I set to hatch for Easter weekend turning away. God I hope this works. Esp after today getting a phone call at 5:30am that my box of 25 bantam EE and 2 bantam welsummer chicks were frozen to death in shipping from the hatchery. They didn't stand a chance in that flimsy box without a heat pad and more bedding. Poor babies. I ordered new EEs from another hatchery along with some bantam Belgian Bearded D'uccle chicks. Here's hoping they arrive in style early next week (right as I'm dealing with newly hatched babies of my own), I want a big brooder full for Easter, that is my one wish.

Noahsmom,
last year we bought 12 hens-2 of them ended up being roosters. I didn't want to part with either of them because they WERE so sweet. They began mating the hens when they were about 5 months old. The hens were fine for a short time but by this past January you could really tell that several hens were being mated more than others. I tried hen saddles-but my hens don't like to wear them. After one of the hens ended up with about 50 stitches we decided that one rooster had to go. I have heard others say that 1 rooster to 10-15 hens is good. We have had only one rooster now for about 2 months and the hens are doing better. There are still a couple that really need to get used to wearing a saddle-they would be so much better.

We bought 30 chicks last year and turned out half roosters. We finally made a separate rooster house after most of the hens were missing the feathers on their backs and had broken tail and wing feathers. The ladies thanked us by starting to lay more frequently (we left our nicest roo in along with the smallest roo to maintain fertile eggs). In preparation for chicks this week, we "culled the flock". It was sad to see them go, but really, if you can't eat them, you have to explain far too many pet roosters :)
