Renee... (chooks) that really sucks. I hope you don't have brain damage chicks. But you do what you have to if they are. It will super suck, but you are right about having had lots of awesome hatches. Remember, you are the queen of the incubating tip sheet. Hugs from the Cheesehead.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Easter! (and hatch!)
It has been a very busy weekend here therefore I really fell behind on posts and I just couldn't seem to have enough time to sit down and catch up.

My hatch is over and was so-so. Like Kim, I am happy when something hatches. Lately I have been doing better with shipped eggs than local. Hows that for ironic?
I set 32 eggs
14 day candle, removed 12 clears
Lockdown - removed 3 more, locked down 17
9 hatched
7 Olive eggers
2 Cochin

Oh and that beautiful purple egg I had???? It hatched and she (

) is pictured below (kim...Im thinking she could be a great influence to your purple layers flock)
What color do you think she will feather out as? Could I be so lucky for her to be lavender? Lavender purple egg layers...who wouldn't want them?

I LOVE THAT CHICK!!
I only get a tad stink if I hatch for more than 3 days straight, you should smell first, and candle tap and check for internal pips.... https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/step-by-step-guide-to-assisted-hatching
thumbsup.gif

Can you post pics of the pips? any more progress? when was first pip noticed?
if you see its beak and the fluid/blood stopped it should rest for some time now, please scroll down in the article on assisting malposition's https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/step-by-step-guide-to-assisted-hatching
I AGREE with this, I have hatched plenty and only issue I ever had was shipped silkie eggs, and if you search you will find they have weak air cells so its tough doing silkie eggs shipped.
my own silkies hatch awesome at normal procedures!
OMG I LOVE THIS CHICK!! what breed is she??? Can I have one!!!! Ach du gut in Himmel! eye eye

Congrats and beautiful pic and daughter!
I would make sure you calibrate thermometers for next hatch.... see temps section for more info, also at the bottom what went wrong.... https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/hatching-eggs-101
Come on peeps!!!! You can do it!!!

see above
I would read the article, candle tap and listen for chirps and look for internal pipshttps://www.backyardchickens.com/a/step-by-step-guide-to-assisted-hatching
when did she hatch? she is cute! see above reply if its been a day since this one hatched

wait and wait some more, a lot of times they can get out on their own, here is some reading material... there is a section on malpositions, HOWEVER ducks are dif than chickens, they take 2x longer to absorb, could be 48+ hrs after pip https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/step-by-step-guide-to-assisted-hatching
Had you calibrated thermometers and hygros?

Come on Chicks!!!
I cant tell 100% so is this its vent or its navel?
YAY I cant wait for my broody to hatch!! so is so pretty laying there so flat and fluffy too! she looks like a big heart shaped chicken!
yes wonkey air cells can hatch, but you may have to watch as it may need assistance sometimes they cannot position correctly https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/step-by-step-guide-to-assisted-hatching
WHAT CONTEST? WHICH ONE? They will be listed as winners are finalized, please see first page of this thread for more info on winners. Bare with us, Its a holiday too, Happy EASTER!!
AWESOME!
HII. Im the one about the contest. I was talking about the how many eggs one. Sorry i should've been more specific. Have a great Easter from me and the buff orpington on my hand! :)

Well, I candled all the eggs, specifically looking for an internal pip, since I KNEW there had to be at least one since we heard cheeping yesterday. Didn't see movement in any of the eggs, some look questionable on size, filling up of the shell. Found one near the back of the right side that had a large dark hump up into the air sac area. So carefully pipped it, and found out it was NOT internally pipped, but the foot of the chick was pushing a large bump into the air sac, but still in the membrane. The chick was pretty fully developed, but had a large yellow yolk sac, and it was not moving at all. We completed the eggtopsy and confirmed that it was already dead.

The LAST egg I candled on the back of the other side ended up being our internal pipper - but we found it too late.

Fully formed chick, no yolk, beak through the membrane, but never made it through the shell. Might have been in a weird position. Hard to tell. I am so bummed that I didn't check for it yesterday when we still heard it peeping!!!

I left the other eggs in for now, but I didn't see ANY movement and I am very doubtful that there is anything alive in there. Strange thing was that a couple of the air cells looked HUGE, like almost 1/3 or more of the shell, but others looked almost too small!

I don't know what happened. I will report again in another day with my final count, but I think it will be 0.

At least we have some chicks coming from McMurray next Monday...

I have 17 chicks from 30 set.

And GUESS WHAT?! It WAS paddle leg! All but one of the chicks have fully recovered! I'm thrilled. I believe the last ne will recover too, have her under the Ecoglow now

Yaaay!

Isn't it cute, now that you know that they will be ok? I had one in this hatch as well night before last. It started it's little walk, and I actually said out loud..paddle walk! Then smiled. Happy that's all it was.

GOOD NIGHT EVERYONE !!! Congratulations on all the cute chicks that have hatched!

Good night? Ha, that's right ~ 2 hr. difference. That means that my son will be in bed about now. Have a good nights rest michaelf!!

This hatch doesn't look good. I lost most in 1 bator & several more quit when I moved them to that bator for lockdown. Guess it's time for that bator to go bye-bye. I think I have 2-3 duck eggs left out of both batches (mine & JJ's), 1 chicken & maybe a couple quail. Temps were running low in at least 1 bator, because 1 duck that I thought was a quitter long ago was still alive when I eggtopsied & I didn't realize until it was too late. I hurried up & put the other back just in case. I don't have a single pip yet. Mine were a day behind everyone else's though, but still should have been hatching today. I REALLY need to get a cabinet bator. My bators SUCK!!!

Regarding giving treats to chicks, what is the best age to start? I have read around 2 weeks online. I'm only asking because I have a bag of meal worms and thought about offering a few to the chicks. Just wondering when others start? I know there starter is the most important at this point, but I think they would have a ball trying out some new things.
Also, what are some other 'first' treats you start out giving your chicks? ...Okay, one more question then I will shh lol when can I offer them plain yogurt?
