BLACK Betty update, picked her up she growled, stayed flat as a pancake too!

I looked at 4 eggs while holding her and saw notta! she was due to give birth today.
I forgot to tell her she is only allowed 21 days!

I don't regret it at all. I absolutely love it! Got the Brinsea spot check too.

As for the mom, who knows. There are sooooo many predators here. We live right smack dab in the middle of a game trail. These were my neighbors chooks cuz he lets them free range. Mine are in a pen safe (hopefully) from predators.
Those 3 babies look like his ganoi chooks. There breast is bare like a Shamo. I'll get pix later this week.

Here's some more photos for you all to enjoy!

The first chick to hatch was a chipmunk, and I thought it had a "blue" hue to some of his stripes. Sure enough, it's little wing tips are blue & brown!
I can't image what it'll look like once feathered out!




Chick on left is a "blue" and yellow - it's wing tips look a lavender chick!
The one in the middle is I think a Partridge Rock/Golden Laced Wyandotte mix
The one on the right is the same chick as above

well my hubby says that between my two hatches and the chicks we still have from the hatchery, I have to get rid of some (esp since I set one last batch of eggs - trying to get some offspring from some of my smaller hens that weren't laying when it was still frozen out). So I have chicks for sale. No idea who I'm going to find to buy baby bantam EEs in or near the city. I've got them posted everywhere. I really don't want to give up any of the babies I've hatched, and I have a few chicks from the hatchery picked out to add variety, so I guess I'll have to keep trying to sell the remaining 15 chicks so he doesn't get too ticked when my next hatch happens in a couple weeks. Maybe one of the places that sells locally by the chick will help me (consignment?)

And hubby says that my plastic tote brooders have to go out into the main coop or the shed tomorrow cause these babies are stinking up the place. I guess I love them too much, I don't really smell it (and I keep the door closed and the window propped open in the room they are in). Guess it was only a matter of time before they had to move out of the house anyways. Should be able to keep them warm enough with these brooders (they are almost too warm here in the house which is why I have the window open and the lights propped way above them. Any one else's spouse not really appreciate your little bundles of fluff? Guess he thinks I have too many animals already (10 hens, 4 roos, 3 dwarf rabbits, a kitty, a puppy and his dog and his fish tank). It's my own personal zoo - right? I love them all.

Anyone got ideas for introducing your new babies to an existing flock? I know I have to find new homes for the roos first - they are just too rambunctious. I think two of my hens will probably try to foster the chicks - they are really broody (one is a buff wheaton bantam cochin and the other some sort of barnyard mix of black bantam polish and cochin.) In fact, when collecting the eggs today the buff wheaton (whom I affectionately call B*tchy Hen) was sitting on a whole clutch and was really mad when I tried to take them. I rolled them out from under her and began to pick them up, but she was faster than me and rolled two back underneath. That sneaky little broody. I reminded her that "daddy" (my hubs) was not about to allow her to hatch any since he has already said that the ones in the bator are the last ones for this year. And cause the roos would probably stomp the offspring or they would fall out of the nest box to certain death (it's about 8" off the ground). Also, anyone have a good idea what age I might introduce these babies to their mothers?

If you have an area where they can see each other but still be separated, then integration works best that way. I have an area of my coop that I can section off for broodies, new chicks, any injured chickens, etc.

Well yesterday I did an eggtopsy to see what happened with the eggs under my broody...... all 10 were fully developed and had moved into the hatching position

and then they all died

I was bawling my eyes out, I don't know what happened but I suspect my big bossy Brahma Panda may have bullied her off the nest at some point during the final days and then they got to cold. This Cochin Lily, has always done such an amazing job hatching for me and the rest of the flock have always stayed out of her way and left her alone that iI have never had to separate her, but this is the first time she has gone broody since adding Panda to the group, so now I know from now on she will go in the broody pen.
At least their is a small happy ending, I got a shipment of 10 baby cCochin today and she adopted them all

I'm sorry, but so happy your Cochin has some chicks to mother.

I'm still hatching over here! I set 29 duck eggs on March 2 at noon. As of today, I have 1 early quitter, 1 late quitter, 16 have hatched, and 10 more that are pipped and working on hatching in the incubator!

I also set 12 chicken eggs on March 11 about 7pm - nothing from them yet, I do hope they hatch too, but I can't see a darn thing in them. I'm going to give them a few extra days since my ducks are all so late.

same here lemme see if i can list everyone:
12 dogs, 3 cats, 2 axolotls, a beta, 6 goldfish, 15 little fish, 11 rats, 23 mice, 6 hamsters, 1 gerbil, 50 snakes, 7 crested geckos, 9 dart frogs, 3 scorpions, 2 tarantulas, 5 varieties of pet cockroach, 12 chickens, 2 roosters, 4 guinea hens, 16 older chicks, 15 two week old chicks, 2 few day old chicks, 4 brand new chicks, and 3 brinsea octagons full of hatching eggs. ... i think that is everyone lol pretty much all we do here is take care of and play with the pets lol.

You have some explaining to do.........cockroaches, tarantulas, scorpions? Yucky. And what the heck is axolotls?

All this talk of broodies. No broodies here. But the other day when I reached under my English Orp to collect eggs, all I felt was skin. She's bare from her crop to between her legs. She's never been broody before, but I could fit a crapload of eggs under her as she's HUGE.

I once had a problem with shipping eggs-- carton provided by USPS was totally crushed and could not with stand their own handling. I called the number on the Confirmation tag to get my money back. After several hours and days on the phone, I got endless run around with a smile-- and in the end only got my shipping reimburdes, not even the confirmation of shipping costs. And certainly not the cost of the eggs.

It was an eye opening experience.

Wow. Just got caught up! I've been super busy with tests/exams this week... and watching the little chickies...

Also, one of my little guys died last night. It was a relief. He was obviously suffering (labored respiration, couldn't walk, gargled up drops of electrolyte water, didn't open eyes, etc). The remaining eight are healthy and happy!

bwahaaaaaa that's hilarious! Hope I didn't just typo myself into a hatch full of roo's!

OMG!!! It's the PO here I swear! I sent eggs to Bakersfield last tuesday and they traveled the state. Tons of re routing and the buyer got her broken eggs this morning. I'm going to collect for her again and send them either friday or monday. This is getting rediculous. I've gotten so many damaged boxes and even boxes that looked fine that had every egg broken. The best one was the box that had probably been run over (Not kidding) with stickers and chicken clipart and warnings all over it. It was half in and half out of a plastic bag which had a sloppy "Received Damaged" sticker, barely holding it onto the box and egg running all over. But this is getting to be a habit with them sending boxes all over.

My eggs are suppose to be there this morning. call truck not there yet. I am really worried they won't hatch or mashed. They are sure giving me the run around.
Now if by some chance of luck their not mashed is it better to put in incabator and not turn for a few days or wait a couple days than put in bator. They were sent the 28th I think.....
