Those are hard to get and depending on the variety, they as sometimes a little greener. Just means introducing black along the way to get those really blue eggs. My best lavenders from my favorite breeder lay more of a green, but I introduced a split lav roo and the hens I got from her lay a much bluer egg. But they also have her beauty!

Yes, in this thread!

Hi All,
Well we set out 18 eggs.
We had 8 hatch by March 31, 4 with the cochin, 4 with incubator.

April 1st in the incubator- 2 hatched

8 eggs still in the incubator. I am a little worried these will not hatch. I am giving them until Friday April 5, then I will open them.

Mishaps-first all the eggs were put back in the refrigerator before hatching for a few hours, by mistake. They were sitting on the table in a regular egg carton. I didn't label them. I have learned to label the cartons for now on.,
Then the incubator spiked up to 114 degrees for a while on one day.

Our intake fan the (little black one in the picture) I believe has been putting to much cool air on the egg that did not hatch.
They were the closest to the fan and on the perimeter of the cooler.

We ended up changing the way the humidity was coming in. You'll notice in the two above the container with white intake and white/blue output. The container was metal and
corroding and covered the mister in the water with rust. The mist output declined. DH Fixed that, used old humidifier container- plastic. This all on the outside now.
This worked well until we needed the humidity % to go up to 65-70.

We added a pan of water and sponges and a bigger fan to the outside to help blow mist into the incubator. I am holding the output tube. This worked.

Well I am hopeful. There were 2 eggs with the red ring of death that I pulled early. I will probably have to add 8 eggs I have left to my dead count for a total of 10 failed eggs.

Cochin 100% hatched
So far "Incubator" 43%

This is our first time doing incubator hatch. DH wanted to make an incubator. We had an old cooler and off he ran.
There a lot of changes he will make. Especially with space for day 18- 25. Had to put up barriers so chick didn't fall into water or under the little box by going over the side. The box is sitting on the turners. He is changing so the turners can come out and a bigger container holding eggs will sit on the bottom.
I'll let you know Friday.
I'll post cooler incubator pics soon.

So our hatch is over and we stayed at 9. We are happy with the 9 but a little sad about the 3 that looked like they would hatch and didnt:( It looks like the air cells caused serious malposition and that was the reason they were unable to pip. It has been a very good learning experience for the kids and we have several families now excited about backyard chickens!!! Another teacher has approached my son about doing a hatch in her class later this month so looks like we will be doing another round!!!!
I will try and post some pictures when I get back home later tonight!

My DH and I have an agreement. He doesn't tell me how many animals I can keep and I don't tell him how many guns he can buy.

same here... only it is more of an unspoken agreement- if he thinks i have too many chickens or something i notice he starts gun shopping lol

yes speaking of post office- I always tell the seller to mark the box "hold at post office - call (my phone number) for delivery" so that my crummy mail lady doesn't ruin the eggs. I have literally seen her drop boxes of labeled hatching eggs out of her car window to the ground. anyways I just got 24 showgirl silkie eggs delivered today and instead of holding them at the post office and calling me like the box said to, they delivered them to the end of the road and put them sideways on the mailbox! crazy- at least she didn't drop them.

and my pets are awesome by the way- you wouldn't think so since some are creepy crawlies but some people think chickens are weird pets. Plus they all have different personalities, some tarantulas build really intricate webs, and you can make them build even cooler ones by putting sticks and other obstacles in the tank, the cockroaches all have different behaviors, some are bold and outgoing and some are more shy it's fun to experiment and see what their favorite foods are (mine love apples) , the scorpions build these really neat little burrows under the bark in their tank and when you feed them they dart out and grab a cricket and then run back to their den. oh and axolotls are salamanders that never complete metamorphosis - so they have little gills and have the sweetest little faces. I will post a pic:

My hatch is done. I candled, float tested, and cracked them open today.

5 set
1 infertile
2 early deaths
2 late deaths

0% hatch rate.

One of the late deaths was a fully developed baby. It had absorbed the yolk and was in the hatching position. I think that it got shrink wrapped.

The other one looked like it got smooshed by the saddle shaped air cell. As sad as it was I am glad that I did the eggtopsy because now I know what to change for next time. I am just disappointed that there are no babies in the brooder.
