The 4th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long

So I already entered this in the cute Easter chicks contest, but had to share it here cause it is too precious. This is my niece Sarah. I thought it would be immeasurable fun to let her play with some of the chicks from the hatch on Easter Sunday and take some photos (and cause my sister really wanted some good photos of her). Oh boy, the sheer excitement of it was almost too much. The face she is doing here we in my family call "bird lips" which I though went well with the chicks. You can see her just exploding with excitement. Couldn't hardly get her to sit still and she kept picking them up by their heads - good thing they are a lot sturdier than they look. I have a few others where they climbed up into her lap, but by that point, she was getting tired of sitting still so the facial expressions are not quite as good. Can't ask for more from an 8mo old though.

Adorable!

I checked page 1 and my hatch numbers have not been recorded nor my number for the guess how many hatch.

First here is my hatch numbers (I did post them):

42 set
23 lock down
21 hatched

here's the link where I posted my guess: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...-contest-11-guess-how-many-eggs-will-hatch/30

I am sure its very difficult to keep up with all that's going on with this contest. I appreciate everyone's hard work!
I just doubled checked, and your guess and total hatch is listed, so we are good. Thank You!

I have one chick that is constantly trying to jump "out"? Of the brooder? Mainly when I walk over and talk to them then walk away will this chick do it but I'm almost worried! I can hear it constantly jumping and it's body slamming against the brooder(container). I'm guessing this chick is ready for some out of brooder time?
I get a fallen limb (something that's short enough to fit in the brooder) out of the yard and add it so they have something to jump up on- it's really good for their respiratory system to jump a lot, as it allows them to fully fill their air sacs. They love to pick at them, too.

You might think about putting vet wrap on the stubs regularly so the ends don't get worn and hurt. Just a couple of layers would give him some protection while still allowing the flesh to breathe and also allowing him full control similar to what he now experiences. Poor fellow!

Well, I lost me assisted hatch today.

She had a bump on her naval that never went down. Quite honestly, I was surprised she made it a week (almost). I noticed this morning that the naval bump made a shelf for poop to stick to. I cleaned her up today (poop only), but it seemed like the bump was worse...like it had been leaking. It was kinda crusty like dried honey. I left it alone & just sprayed it with Vetericyn. I had to run some errands today & she was gone when I got home. I had just decided to call her Button too...as in belly button. Really sux.
