it is from "heritage blue slate x bourbon red x narragansett" all free ranging together so could be purebred if the right parents got together but is probably a mix.

I was going to say it looked like narrgansett but it looked a tad off almost like it could be a lighter coloured bronze! but ya it looks like it is at least half a Narragansett!!

Why do I insist on going to look at the chick bins when I go to Southern States to buy feed???

Although, I'm glad I did this time. No chicks, but keets...with one, lone baby all by itself laying on its side, barely under the heat lamp, isolated in one of those cardboard chick boxes.

"What's wrong with that baby?" I ask.

"Dunno, it was like that when the shipment got here this morning. It either got too cold overnight, or it got trampled." says employee.

"Aww, poor thing. I hope it makes it." I say.

"Doubt it. One of the guys in the back will probably break its neck to put it out of its misery." says employee.

Yeah... I. Don't. Think. So.

Meet Gilly:

You are my hero!

Hope Petula Clark will forgive me

When Eighteen days pass and they have life to show
They go to Lock Down
The days that are left they pass so terribly slow
Because of Lock Down
You peak into the bator and wish you saw some pipping
You stare at broody mamas and your husband thinks you're flipping
He may be right
But it's an amazing thing
What could have been someone's breakfast
Will soon be hatching
During Lockdown
Chicks will be coming out
Lockdown
We will all whoop and shout
Lockdown
New chicks we're waiting for you

ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!!!!! And Totally Agree!
My husband does think I'm flipping out, wondering what in the heck can I be looking at sitting there staring into the incubator while they are rocking and rolling and pipping and hatching.... Why oh why is she still sitting there??? It's 2:30 in the morning, go to bed! Noooooo.... one may hatch while I'm sleeping.... Wait, hear that??? I heard a peep... just a few more mintues, I'll be there shortly..... Oh, what time is it now??? Oh well, let's go make breakfast!

Good Save Becca!

I don't think I would. Ducklings are rather messy, I think the deep litter would become a deep wet smelly mess.
A duckling brooder to be livable has to be changed daily. People do all different things to make theirs bearable...I put shavings down, and cover the whole thing with puppy pee pads. It gets expensive but I can't stand the smell. It's a very unique smell the gruel they make of their feed and water. I'm getting ready to do it all over again too. Good luck. Oh, another tip is to put their waterer in an aluminum lasagna pan. It helps!

What?  At this time of year?  I used to live there.  I don't remember it getting that cold.  I remember it was a big deal if we got a foot of snow, then the schools were trying to decide if there would be school or not..because of buses running.  That was back in the 60's.   Here, the buses run when we've had 4 or 5 ft. of snow.  They are always ready for snow in the winter.

Crazy, I know! It has been a long brutal winter with record breaking low temps and lots of snow and ice. We got a big snow a couple days before St. Patrick's Day. Then sleet and snow last night. This was after a really warm weekend - I actually got a sunburn hiking! Anyway, winter doesn't want to let go.

"Locked Down" officially this afternoon. Added a sponge for humidity. I place it under the back vent hole in my LG so I can add water as needed directly to the sponge via a straw through the hole. 33 eggs in LG, and took 6 of the HAL eggs out to my broody BA yesterday afternoon. She was thrilled to get some eggs that I did not take away from her each evening, and is now snug and safe in our broody apartment inside the main coop.

My family thinks I am seeing things, but I KNOW I saw one of the OE eggs in the LG WIGGLE this afternoon when I just HAPPENED to be checking the eggs...

I was just staring at mine and saw a wiggle, so I ran to grab my phone and waited for what seemed like for ever and....nothing. I swear I heard snickering, though.
