I made the mistake of telling my husband that I hate the "k" response on text message. And picked on him about his keyboard being broke cause only the "k" button worked. And asked why he was so interested in the periodic table. So now he responses with "potassium".

Sounds like my DH's sense of humor! Gotta love him!!

I'm back from taking the two RIR chicks to my friend's house. Turns out the one I posted the picture of has not only slipped tendons in both legs, but dislocated hip joint as well. There was nothing she could do...she tried everything she could and even put her in a harness, but the injuries were too bad. So she sent her to chick Heaven.

On a happier not, the other RIR is splinted up and doing ok. Turns out his knee/leg joint was dislocated as well, but my friend popped it back in place and Vetrapped the leg up. He's putting weight on that foot now!!!

While I was gone, my mom texted me to let me know one of the eggs hatched. I called her on my way home, and this is pretty much the conversation we had:

Mom: "It was one of the silkie eggs that hatched. But I think there's something wrong with it."

Me: "Oh no, what's wrong with it? I know it took over 24 hours to hatch, so I figured something might be wrong."

Mom: "Well, it's acting ok...it's just...Becca, it has a tumor."

Me: "A tumor?"

Mom: "Yes, a tumor. There's a huge tumor on the top of her head."

Apparently, Mama didn't know that Silkies are born with a very tall skull cap.
haha i just had one hatch with a "tumor" as well:

So far, I have 22/24 BBS Australorps rocking, and one that I think may be rocking. I am having vertigo at the moment, and I always have nystagmus; my eyes will "jump" slightly when I move my eyes to the side with the vertigo. So, they have to be moving pretty well before I'm ready to say the chick is actually moving in the egg.

I can't believe I found BBS Aussies. The breeder bought the foundation stock at a poultry swap meet and did not write down their name. But her birds are clearly Aussies. Soon excited!

So our shipped SFH eggs were doing horribly.

Out of 20 eggs only 9 showed ANY development.

7 made it to lockdown, many with saddle shaped air cells so they needed to be hatched in a carton to increase their chances of survival.

2 hatched okay and the 3rd was upside down.

Chronology of an upside down chick.
Day 20 pipped. I could see it was upside down.
Day 21, still screaming in the same position. I carefully enlarged the pip towards the air sack (it was saddle shaped) about 1/4". Put back in the incubator.
Day 21, 12 hours later. Still screaming so I enlarged the area a little more. Put back in the incubator.
Day 22, hatched and stuck upside down to the shell and carton.

How we found the very stuck chick this morning

The water is warm and it is sitting on a heating pad. I am in sitting next to a wall heater to try and keep it warm.

The wing and one foot are stuck fast to the carton. The shell is stuck to its head and other wing.

Soaking the shell off the wing.

Getting the last of the cart off. The chick liked the warm water.

Big chunk of shell and membrane stuck to its back. We took that off too.

The chick is now resting in a bowl in the incubator. Hopefully with a full recovery!

3 of the other SFH had internal pips but I see no movement so they might have quit.

On the plus side, we are 10 hatched out of 14 Orpington eggs that made it to lockdown!

I'm so happy to see so many people having their chicks pip & hatch today. It's really exciting to be a part of this! I feel like I'm hatching thousands of gorgeous chickens, but without the responsibility of those numbers!! :)

As for my own hatch, early this morning at 5am I heard pipping (because I'm up at 5AM on holidays, right....). Then late this morning (when I was sleeping, for reals) my DH woke me up to say 3 had pipped. Within 30 mins the 4th (out of 5) had pipped.
I gotta clean the house for Spring Cleaning & all I wanna do is push my nose against the coolerbator.

Quote: GOod luck with those turkey eggs!!

Six have now hatched, I can't get the temp up, and condensation is forming on the windows!!! What do I do?
Maintain air flow at all costs--- pipped chicks need more oxygen than non-pipped, and hatched babies need MUCH more oxygen. Oxygen comes from a good air fl ow thru the incubator.

condensation is ok---or not is ok too. Less is better-- what does hydrometre read?

Temp at 97 + is ok.

With all that condensation the temp really does need to get below 99 as the babies can't breath well when the condensation is so high and hot at the same time.

DD and Maddy just left to pick up my grandson, Draven and Maddy's BFF, Bella for our HAL sleep over/Easter eggstravaganza. Three 5 year olds all weekend. Mamaw is gonna need a vaca after this.
