Last nights pipper is still zipping and I have two more pips!

So our shipped SFH eggs were doing horribly.

Out of 20 eggs only 9 showed ANY development.

7 made it to lockdown, many with saddle shaped air cells so they needed to be hatched in a carton to increase their chances of survival.

2 hatched okay and the 3rd was upside down.

Chronology of an upside down chick.
Day 20 pipped. I could see it was upside down.
Day 21, still screaming in the same position. I carefully enlarged the pip towards the air sack (it was saddle shaped) about 1/4". Put back in the incubator.
Day 21, 12 hours later. Still screaming so I enlarged the area a little more. Put back in the incubator.
Day 22, hatched and stuck upside down to the shell and carton.

Assisted :
How we found the very stuck chick this morning

The water is warm and it is sitting on a heating pad. I am in sitting next to a wall heater to try and keep it warm.

The wing and one foot are stuck fast to the carton. The shell is stuck to its head and other wing.

Soaking the shell off the wing.

Getting the last of the cart off. The chick liked the warm water.

Big chunk of shell and membrane stuck to its back. We took that off too.

The chick is now resting in a bowl in the incubator. Hopefully with a full recovery!

3 of the other SFH had internal pips but I see no movement so they might have quit.

On the plus side, we are 10 hatched out of 14 Orpington eggs that made it to lockdown!
Nice nursing job on that upside down chick.

As for the interal pips: You have more patience than I do--- I would be opening up that shell on an internal pip checking for veins, and getting a breathing hole going. lol Maybe it is resting.

I put up a camera on my first pipped egg... it's not doing a whole lot yet. I sure hope it's okay - the hole is bigger since it first pipped at 10 last night. But now it's going on 14hrs since first pip. @Sally Sunshine I'm so glad you have that timeline video posted because otherwise I'd probably be freaking out LOL.

Anyway - for anyone that wants to watch it wiggle lol

Thank you Cynthia12 I hope your right why do the look so different in a auto turner vs. hand turning them? I went ahead and kept them and said a lil prayer and hope they turn out

I don't know how to explain this one. I guess it's because of how the baby is laying in there. When on the side, they can be seen more easily, the eye especially. It moves around like a black little dot from the beginning. When I have the turner on for some eggs, I don't see much movement until they are quite a ways along. Which, is ok if you are going to wait until day 10 to take a peek. ;) I look on day 5 at a few to get an idea of what it looks like in there. Then day 7 or 8, then day 10. Then at lock down. Good luck, prayer is always a good thing! :)

I'm back from taking the two RIR chicks to my friend's house. Turns out the one I posted the picture of has not only slipped tendons in both legs, but dislocated hip joint as well. There was nothing she could do...she tried everything she could and even put her in a harness, but the injuries were too bad. So she sent her to chick Heaven.

On a happier not, the other RIR is splinted up and doing ok. Turns out his knee/leg joint was dislocated as well, but my friend popped it back in place and Vetrapped the leg up. He's putting weight on that foot now!!!

While I was gone, my mom texted me to let me know one of the eggs hatched. I called her on my way home, and this is pretty  much the conversation we had:

Mom: "It was one of the silkie eggs that hatched. But I think there's something wrong with it."

Me: "Oh no, what's wrong with it? I know it took over 24 hours to hatch, so I figured something might be wrong."

Mom: "Well, it's acting ok...it's just...Becca, it has a tumor."

Me: "A tumor?"

Mom: "Yes, a tumor. There's a huge tumor on the top of her head."

Apparently, Mama didn't know that Silkies are born with a very tall skull cap.

Your mom is right also! Unfuzed sculls are a dangerous thing this is why we take special care of our silkie chicks. I hatch vaulted and unvaulted so people can have chicks safe for mixed flocks.

@ Sally Sunshine I for got to quote you like 5 pages back but the Sick chick is doing great. She decided that 4 times today she would "fly" out of her box and go scream at the others in the big brooder so we put her back in with them. The others were flying out all of the place too. A few perched on top of the brooder looking in the " hospital" box. It was adorable. Still keeping a close eye on her and giving her the electrolytes every couple hours!

I know she is eating but haven't seen her drink yet. But I have been giving her drops of electrolytes all night so maybe just not thirsty. I feel so bad for her being alone.

I may have figured out how they are getting on the floor though.
Oh Jen, she looks good! I would put her in and see how she does. If she isn't drinking on her own yet, she will learn from the others. If she moves out of their way now when they come around, go for it. Just watch them together for a while and see how it goes. What a difference. I think I would stop the electrolytes now.
