This is my data for my shipped eggs. My hatch rate has already been counted, so it doesn't need to be added to the spreadsheet. This is for the person tracking info on shipped eggs. I meant to add this earlier:

Number set- 14
Viable after first candling- 8
Hatch number- 4
Number assisted- 0
Number pipped but did not hatch- 0 (2 pipped internally and did not hatch)
Day started turning- 5
Turning method- autoturner

One other note: I usually settle shipped eggs for 24 hours before setting, but this time I did not due to time constraints (needed eggs to hatch before I traveled over the weekend) Plus the eggs were delayed in travel. They were in transit for 6 days, and I was concerned for their viability. Still, my hatch rate was basically in line with what I usually get on shipped eggs. I've never gotten more than 50%. These eggs were well packaged. I did have some moving air cells. Not sure if those hatched. I should have marked them! I have had rolling air cell eggs hatch before though.

I'm glad someone is compiling this info! I'd love to hear the results.

So sorry..this is very sad.  Sounds like you weren't even concerned about it being sick until you saw it towards the end.  :hugs

I try to check them at least once every few hours. It was fine when I check them last and i really know this because i checked for pasty butt... i do everyday twice a day. Im not sure what happened :-(

Thanks so much for this info. I think I am getting sick, for some weird reason the pics made me slightly queasy

which is so not normal for me. I am going to have to try removing his spurs, if stays around much longer. Good as he is with the girls and all I sometimes have small children here and I am afraid he might hurt them.

ugggghh if I had gotten up earlier I may have saved this HRIR so mad!

external pip, totally absorbed but the little guy must have had his head on the wrong side of his wing and couldn't zip out, he was rolled all over in the egg.
Definitely was traveling in that egg, just couldn't get to peck shell. poor mite. So I have 10 HRIR hatched instead of the 11 that went into lockdown, I shouldnt complain I just hate seeing this type of breakout.
sucks everyone else was hatched and if I would have had my nose on the bator last night I would have seen they all hatched but one and could have stepped in to see what was up.
So with experience comes ignorance too. But it happened, I would bet money the momma hen would have pecked this one out, no doubt about it. What a great timed hatch, overnight and complete!

Can I mention again I love my new Cabinet CoolerBator and my Coolerbators? well I do!

NOTES and Summary of this batch of shipped eggs @ozexpat
Shipped from KY 3/31 and Arrived in PA 4/2
14 HRIR arrived in a shoe box, bubble wrapped and in peanuts, box marked this side up to be horizontal, eggs in this position air cell up.
2 of the oldest eggs marked 3/24 had rolling air cells, another 3/24 was very loose and had no growth, I didnt breakout this one to check fertility but my best guess is that it had internal damage from shipping, AGE of eggs definitely played a huge huge roll (no pun intended) in viability of this batch I can prove this over and over how that air cell size is important, eggs must be only 4 days old MAX when put into a box, 1-3 is always best. Also, my local mail carrier delivered the usps shoe box to my door in hands vertical, my guess is with shoe boxes they don't lay them flat or carry them horizontal despite what is written on the box, again 12x12x8.5 USPS box with an inner box could have very well prevented this along with 2-3 day old only eggs even though most were in this time frame it had severely effected the older eggs.

I set all 14 eggs after the 12-16 hours to settle to room temp and put them in the cabinet bator, ALL NORMAL eggs were turned from the start, the two rollers were not turned when set, no growth in them at day 2 and by day five were tossed because of seepage and cracks as seen above.

Quote: I use a regular dog nail clipper on my White faced Black Spanish roo, I slip the clipper over until its about 1/4" out and snip as fast as I can and then I have kwik stop power and blot it on the cuts, they stop bleeding in a heart beat and the roo has been scared poopless of me ever since I started this. <giggles?

Honestly I wouldn't even bother with spur removal. A mean rooster doesn't need to be kept around, there are too many good, nice and gentle roosters out there that deserve a flock and a home. Here at my house mean roosters here don't get more chances they get sent to the freezer. I have kids too and wouldn't take the chance on maybe he will be taught to be nicer. This is just my own personal opinion.

Hey you are in my neck of the woods! Are you part of the southern York poultry club? Oh, silly me...

sorry I'm late... I didn't see your post before. Thank you :) I don't think I am... is that a Facebook group?

Yes it is. We have a gathering this Friday evening at Bill Bateman's in Stewartstown, just off of I 83. You can also look me up on FB @ Oak Acres Poultry. :)

Quote: That IS cool!! Getting a good hatch can be a big chalenge ; glad it went great!!

And I use the couch too-- closer! lol I could listen for the fat bellied chick that falls on its back and paddles for dear life , making a bowl in the shavings. Poor thing. Needs someone to turn it over. Looks like she is good for go this morning-- staying upright and fat belly absorbed.

Not sure who is keeping track of all of this but wanted to report my stats since we're finally done hatching:

I set 24 eggs (all shipped) in a Brinsea 20 Octagon. Our first hatch ever. 10 Olive Egger eggs and 14 Welsummer eggs.
Before lockdown we removed 7 eggs, then removed an 8th very quickly during the first day of lockdown when it seemed to be suspicious. (Tiny amber drop appeared on the surface.)
We hatched out 5 chicks: Hatched out 2 Olive Eggers (1 had to be assisted due to malposition, but had yolk sac completely absorbed by the time we intervened. It pipped in the middle of the egg and it's head was trapped so it could only cheep out of the one hole it had made. We left it for about 10 hours and when it continued to cheep but made no progress, we felt it was time to intervene. After a slightly longer recovery period, chick is fine.) Hatched out 3 Welsummers.

This was our first hatch ever. The first 4 chicks hatched out absolutely perfectly despite one of them pipping on the wrong end. The fifth chick really tested our abilities to observe and make good decisions based on the situation. We intervened three different times, offering only conservative measures each time to see if the chick were freed up enough to do any hatching on its own. After reading everything here, we were very reluctant to help, but after we realized the positioning, this chick would never have hatched if we hadn't helped out. Now we will just wait to see if it thrives or if we helped an inferior bird to hatch. Knowing that our eggs were shipped and that we had some very weird air sacs (it was extremely difficult to candle the olive eggs), we erred on the side of shipping issues rather than genetic ones. Only time will tell.

Thanks to everyone who contributed on this thread! We have learned so much! Good luck to all the new chick mommy and daddies out there!
