416 posts I have to catch up on...so before I do, I just wanted to pop in and say hello :)

The woman I was going to get duck eggs from for this hatch a long is not going to be able to provide me with any before I set. Her female has not laid an egg in 2 weeks...so I guess I'll just be doing chickens. At least I have more room for chicken eggs !!!

OK so I think I have completely lost it I am putting 200 plus eggs into the bator tomorrow morning hmmmm??? What am I thinking looks like I will most definitely be firing up the second bator for the Easter hatch along I will not fill it lol at this point I could have over 1400 eggs incubating that will not happen. especially with 1200 of them being hand turned. I think this incubating bug has become a full blown illnes for me. I will never sleep again.
Quick! Someone call the Doctor!

Holy cow! I can't even imagine hand turning that many eggs...or dealing with that many chicks at once for that matter!

LOL I agree. Luckily only one of my goats has jumped the fence once, knock on wood.

While I love my 2 little goaties they are sometimes a pain. With all the things you listed above lol. And like you I wont be breeding until fall for a NEXT spring kidding also. It sure is a long time to wait for milk. They are very lucky they are cute

They are adorable!!!!

Sounds like you need to be much more assertive with them! BTW when you go to walk them( they have to be taught
roll.png
) If they drop to the ground I just drag them for a few feet and then stop, wait for them to get up ( whether it be forced or not ) and try again. When training grab a bit of grain and try to get them to walk a foot or so and reward. Eventually they get the hint that walking = food. Only reward if they stop where they were told to stop. Otherwise they think they are in charge. Then they start to cooperate. Sometimes it takes as little bit of time.

Time is something I don't have much of...not until the litter of puppies are out of the house, my kids are no longer sick every day, the fencing is fixed, the run to my second coop is built...etc, etc, etc. But as soon as I have the time, I will TRY to train them...these are my first goats ever, so I'm pretty much going to be training blindly :p

I have a buck & a doe we got ladt summer. The buck was a 2 day old bottle baby & will follow you anywhere. Only problem I have with him is nibbling & it's only because he thinks you have food for him. The doe is a witch! She was 2-3 months old when we got her & already off the bottle. She will try to sit down or pull away when being led & tries to poke you with her horns when you try to attach her chain to her collar. I don't even try to keep them in a fence. I just tie them out in a different place each day. Dog chains & collars work well. It's best to tie our doe to trees because she pulls stakes out of the ground. The buck has never even tried to pull his.

I started to keep them tied up, but I will no longer do this unless I am outside. There are so many predators that could get them...and being tied does not leave them much option to get away. The dogs that run around here, whether strays or pets (there is NO leash law in our county, and hunting dogs are pretty much a daily occurrence on our land), are a constant threat. We also have bobcats...although I don't think they'd attack the goats, but who knows? Coyotes are another fear...they've taken people's pet dogs around here, and a few of them would have no problem taking down to small doelings. So I'm stuck with keeping them in their enclosures.

Yeah X2 ..what brahmabreeder said.. those "sisters" are walking all over you ..literally ! They NEED to learn some manners. I am not saying to beat them...I am saying you can give them a shove back with your knee or something. You will never be able to milk them if they don't learn how to behave now. DO NOT ALLOW THEM TO TREAT YOU THAT WAY...they see you as the low man on the totem pole.
If you need to tie them up to eat ..then do it. They are smart critters, they will learn quickly.

I do shove them back...with my knee, or with my hand, and tell them no. Yeah, it doesn't work lol. Like I mentioned above, I'll try once I have time to train them. SIGH. They are such a PAIN in my BUTT!!!!
Wow! at least you got notice. They just cut ours. with no warning when they do that here. good luck getting a generator.
Yeah, you are lucky you got notice. We don't get a phone call or anything...but they post on facebook. Seriously? Not everyone has a facebook account. Idiots. LOL

Me TOO!!!!

@chicken picken... When the snow was too deep here I used a sled to move the fresh shavings and such into the coops and the nasty stuff to the garden. (thank you for yet another awesome tip, Sally Sunshine).

Since we're posting the goat pics... here are some of my babies:

The above pic is of our "Houdini" we simply could NOT keep her put...till we got the No climb fence, NOT one escape since....Woo Hoo!!! @SilkieSensation (I know, I know, there is no such thing as a 'goat proof fence'), but this is working for me, for now. YAY!!

"No climb fence"....do tell, do tell! What is it???

If you can get yourself one of those battery operated mosquito hand held zapers that looks like a small tennis racquet they work wonders to train goats. They don't have enough power to hurt them. (Yes I tested it on me.LOL) I just touch it to them while telling them out or down and it pops them. It doesn't take long for them to get the picture. Now they rarely jump on me. And know what get out means.

Welcome!

How do you join this? I have my first set ever in the incubator now and was planning a hatch on this date for my second hatch.
Consider yourself joined! Welcome!

Here's what I need because I'm now overwhelmed. I think I just saw the 71st contest attached to this hatch along, and I wanna participate in them ALL but can we have everything all in one spot with all the dates and all the rules right there all in one nice and neat little package? Can someone do that for me?

See the first post in this thread, everything is being updated there. It's constantly changing, so check back often!

I would like to join the hatch along too. Played last year it was so much fun.
Is there a place to offer eggs to other people. (Local or pick up only) flocks roosters are splash wheat Ameruacana and splash Marans. Or a mixture of flock eggs and many different pure breds.
Welcome!

I have a question i already joined but what else do we have to do? Do we post how many eggs we are setting on the 29th?
Contest links are in the first post. Please do not post how many you are setting until the "Guess How Many Eggs Will Be Set" contest is over. After set day, we will be asking folks to post their numbers on how many they set. (along with a picture, cuz we all like to see eggs!)

Am I in the contests? Did I miss the rules? I am so confused
All links for the contests are on the 1st post of this thread. It changes as we open more contests, so check back often!

I'll be doing a staggered hatch of my Bantam Silver-Laced Wyandottes & one batch will fall on the set date - add me to the list, please!
Welcome!

I'll be doing White Plymouth Rocks and Barred Plymouth Rocks. Put me on the list, please.
Glad to have you Fred! Look forward to seeing those beauties!

I'm in!! I just got a message that I'll be able to get some Bresse eggs in time to hatch for Easter!!!
Welcome!

And next to a milk cap for size comparison

Wow, that really shows how tiny they are!

Funny you say that, I've been having trouble breathing for 2 days now. The feeling where you can't get a deep breath. Someone suggested it might be asthma, but I never had asthma. About 5 years ago it started, I'll be fine forever and then have it for a few days, then back to normal. Weird, I know, I should probably get it checked out. I hate going to the doctors for anything.
Hope you feel better soon!

Rough day yesterday led to a tad bit too much vino. I managed to keep myself from posting anything crazy on Facebook. I did NOT manage to keep myself away from the hair dye... Someone really needs to keep a better eye on me.

wishing them good luck on their hatch
Beautiful eggs! Good luck!

'No Climb" I think is a synonym for Woven wire... not sure. Here's a link:

Quote: I can picture this!! In honor of the pics or it didn't happen....I ventured outside for proof, I had a photo bomber who was not very subtle. I also learned after viewing the pics that the dye was not applied evenly....hmmmm trying to see this as a 'good' thing. Oh well... Ron, you still got the number for the person who 'fixed' your daughter's hair?
