Finally I got a call form the PO about a Rhodebar rooster I bought. He got lost in transit! Arrived 2 days late!! Poor thing was in a box for four days. Luckily everything is ok. He came with all the NPIP paperwork and all testing paperwork. I still have him in quarantine for about a month to be double sure! He is in good spirits after eating and drinking some water. Been crowing this afternoon.
Wow! 4 days!! poor guy. Glad he's doing okay.

Thought you would think this pic was funny... Worked my rear off today too, and made a huge mess while doing it. Gutted every coop, then took a leaf blower to it to get in every crack. Dumped a pile of Sevin dust in each coop, closed doors and blew the heck out of it with the leaf blower. THEN went back in and doused each coop with DE. Dusted every bird. I am ashamed at what I found on some of my birds vents. I really would encourage everyone to turn your girls upside down and inspect the vent. EVEN if they appear fluffy and beautiful. New shavings. Next Saturday I'll dose with Ivermectin. Please no yelling at me for my over use of chemicals...this case of mites was extreme (I definitely won't be eating the eggs for a looong time). I wish we'd had time to start on tearing down the half torn down dilapidated runs, but the mites took precedence. Next weekend I'll start on tear down/rebuild. Did I mention the 3 inches of mud that had to be tromped through for 5 hours while doing this?? My legs got a workout! I did wear my mask though Sally, lol. I'm exhausted but I feel accomplished, A Good Day!
WOW! Awesome work day, chica! I told my son, 'I worked my butt off' and he said, 'No you didn't. I still see it.'

And I feel your pain with the mites!!! I didn't think of using a blower (or mask). I used the liquid Permethrin to spray down the coop, especially roosts. Ivermectin on the chooks, with a date in 10 days to do it all over again. I think all the snow and mud has ruined their dusting routines. My neighbor gave me some Wood ash to keep in a box in the run, but it wasn't till after I discovered the mites.

just shipped some eggs today

Great Packing!!

Wanted to share my win from our meetup's raffle last night ^^ An adorable hand-knit chicken sweater!
Betty needed treats to be bribed into modeling xD
Funny! We've got a 'Betty' too, although her full name is 'Fat Betty'

I will be hatching Bielefelders and barthuhners. The wife agreed to let me get them because A they are fairly rare and B she thinks they look awesome... Such a relief. A little later I'll be getting sulmtalers... Can't wait the Bielefelder Roos can be 10+ lbs... Those will be some beefy birds!
Oh yeah! those are not 'eating' eggs, they are 'hatching' eggs for sure!!

That is great!

My sister came over the other day with her baby, he is almost 5 months old. She said she had just had him at the Drs for a check up and the Dr asked if he had exposure to animals because it helps with allergies and the immune system. My sister said "Well my sister has a farm down the road". The Dr told her "Well bring the baby there, if she has a cow let him lick the cow" lol. My sister said well she has goats. Dr says "Let him lick the goats" lol. Of course she wasn't serious about licking them, just expressing it would be good for him to have the exposure. The baby does love chickens though he gets mesmerized.

Good Sunday Morning All.

Im up super early, DH was up getting ready to go ice fishing so I got up too. I think ill make some coffee and have some breakfast.

After reading some of the other posts I think Ill dust my chickens today. I had one of those turtle shaped sand boxes I set up in the early winter filled with wood ash dirt DE I was going to use it during the winter but had no where to keep it fully covered so it has been buried all winter. My chickens have all been resorting to dust bathing in the coop shavings.

I think today I also need to spray the goats down for their second treatment for lice. The first treatment worked AWESOME. I saw no lice the next day but of course in case I missed any and also for all the eggs that will hatch. I think today is the day to battle me some bugs lol.

Well. Good Mornin' y'all! It's raining here. Bleh. So I will not be putting hoops on the new turkey enclosure today.
Question for those of you who hatch in cartons: How exactly do you cut the cartons? I keep hearing about folks cutting the cartons down but have not been able to figure out what they mean. If anyone could post pics of how it should look I would be most grateful!

I just simply trim a hole in the bottom of each egg cup, just to allow more oxygen flow.
