The 5th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

I now have 5 chicks hatched. One I had no choice to to lift the incubator lid to take a warm wet q-tip around the shell because it had gotten stuck. Once I did that it was popped out of the shell in 30 minutes. I am hatching in egg cartons and that does not seem to stop them from trampling all over the other unhatched eggs. I find it funny because two or three kept getting back in their shell or a shell of one of the ones that hatched and just sitting there. I will provide more pictures later So tell me how long does it take them to dry off ? Should I wait until they are dry before putting them in the brooder. They have a lovely warm one waiting for them. (Just a pink plastic tote with a lamp clamped to the side.)

How exciting!

Let them fluff up in the incubator.

It used to be really bad

the humidity is that bad a broody only gets a 60% hatch

I built a small room - 5x12 - sealed it up and put a dehumidifier i dismantled, carried on a 747 and put back together.

That did the trick. My ambient room humidity is now 45%

Oh, I think I remember you talking about that. You are quite the handy man, and come up with the most ingenues ways to get things to home!

well i would trust an emu in with geese and goats but i think my chickens would get picked on or trampled. Maybe some extra roos could live with the goats and geese

Never mind emus stepping on the poor chickens..I stepped on my poor Sparkle today! I did not even see her as I was hurrying out to get tarps down and chickens placed.

We are having major Mircro Burst Wind. Not Good! This is usually when I see the power go out. :/ Went to the store, it was way windy, coming home, we were watching the trees. We have a lot of pine trees fall from yards during these kind of winds. Garbage cans fallen over everywhere..I feel for the Garbage men today. Staying in for the rest of the day, there is a wind warning, and it's supposed to last until evening.

Lol there I go again calling any fluffy baby bird a chick. Although this time, I think that's what they are actually called.

Congrats on your wiggly, noisy egg!!!

Check out my broody coop in progress:

Our weather comes from the North and the West so most of the ventilation will originate on the East and South

I keep telling the girls they have to show me the money to get to move into it but so far all I have had has been a bit of breast plucking and some extended ...3 hour sitting. So far the one who seems most likely to lead lead broody fever is a mutt named Norma. Mama is an Australorp, Dad was a barnyard mix ??? we think part American Game

This was her last fall
