So, I'm buying a doz eggs for next week plus using my own. If my broody continues, do I use her or my still air styrofoam incubator? Or split the difference? Opinions?
Give her some and do the rest in your incubator. Has she brooded before? If not, only give her what you are willing to sacrifice, if she doesn't stay put. Then you can weed out your clears, both in the incubator and under her. If they will all fit under her, you can move the rest of the eggs from your bator to under her the last day or two of incubation. Then she hatches and raises them.

I know! they are the Lav ameracauna! I will take a photo box shot of them tomorrow! one is weird though.... its yellowish is that weird or what? I dont know much about that breed though. I will snap a pic of that one tomorrow too. I think most the CCL are MALES again!!! what is up with that!! I have never hatched so many boy chicks ever!! frustrating!
That's strange, I don't know of any way you'd get a yellow chick from yellow. Unless they slipped a wheaten ameraucana egg in by mistake?

Candled. Pulled out 10 more. 6 I wasn't totally sure about on day 7 and left in there just in case, but were clears (mostly blue eggs which are so darn hard to see through). 4 early quitters. There was one question mark blue from day 7 that was totally a developing embryo today! Yay for leaving them in an additional week. DH got all freaked out when I told him there were still 50ish eggs still in there! He said we're going to be totally overrun with chickens.

I reminded him that we have a strong Asian population in our area who are keen to buy chicks in large quantities at bargain prices if I ever feel overrun. I have no doubt I can sell a large number of these chicks quickly if push came to shove. For a second there I thought maybe he was going to say I couldn't hatch for Easter, but I think he's back on board.

Phew! That was close!

I have to weigh in to say, I'm glad I didn't start collecting all my RSL's eggs for the hatch-a-thon yet. They were averaging two eggs a day last week. Today I got FIVE. They sure start up quick. These are my first sex links and they sure are great layers, aren't they!!
Yes, they are great layers - it's what they are bred to do.

I want to join!
Not sure what I am setting (numbers), but I am definitely participating!
Welcome!

Sparkle, my House Silkie, has gone broody again. She has raised four, small broods of chicks for me in the past 14 months; her last brood hatched 12/31/13, a day early for the NYD Hatch-a-long. (She is a fast hatcher!)
Good timing Sparkle!

Welcome!

OK, this is not good, not good at all... The fan unit in the top of my main bator keeps coming loose from the screws. I am heating up the cooler bator right now, going to transfer the eggs before the unit falls and crushes an egg or a chick. I don't understand how this happened....this is a brand new unit that I just put in and the screws are stripped already?! Think I am going to try to add some glue to try to help hold it together. Must get it fixed before the main event!
IF the glue doesn't hold, you might consider wiring it up. I used long twist'ems, 4, one at each corner. THe greates dificulty was finding a suitble location to attach to the fan without interfering with function. ANd then slowly punch 4 holes in the lid to slide the twistem's thru. twist 2 together to secure. ALlows for variation in positioning. too. GOod luck. YOu have a few days. . .

I want to join!
