I lockdowned my test hatch today - 25 eggs. I am having trouble keeping the humidity up. I have all the wells filled in my hovabator and a wet washcloth underneath the air hole through which I can drop warm water. The temperature is about 99.5, but I can't get the humidity above 50%. Any suggestions?

I weighed the eggs before I taped the bator shut (in case my six year old neighbor is tempted to open it). The percentage weight loss ranged between 12% and 21% (all the Ameracaunas were between 17 and 21; the others were mostly 12 -13% - I thought that was interesting). As I type this, I wonder if my hydrometer is accurate, because these are high percentage losses. I kept the humidity at about 30% throughout the hatch. It's hard to believe that there is such a difference between eggs when the humidity is the same for all of them. After candling, I changed the eggs around to different spots in the bator, too.

I hope I hear pips soon, or I am going to get very nervous.

I hope the hatch goes well.

Look for condensation on the veiw window. If you see condensation then Humidity is over 80% and the hygrometer is off. If you are sure that humidity is ok, then you can raise humidity by stuffing paper towels into the water channels. You can also add a glass or plastic storage container with a clean kitchen sponge into the bator to raise humidity.

Do not add plugs!

If there are no pips yet, you can remove the security tape and add the sponge and or paper towels.

Nice picture. But I REALLY want to know, is that a HUGE barn in the background? I want THAT!
yes that is just one of my mom's huge barns. and it is just filled with.... stuff... lol everything from old cars, hay, furniture, couches, down to teacups, I even think there is a kitchen sink in there. It reminds me of those places that the "antique hunters" would go into to find cool old stuff.
I am jealous though- I could keep SO MANY CHICKENS in there!
