I am hoping mine go out tomorrow!

Hello, well after a day of rest I am finally starting to feel better.
smile.png
I hope everyone has had a good Monday! My chicks are starting to get their wing feathers in. (Where does the time go?) My son's ankle/foot is still very swollen.. Have not called the Orthopedic Dr. yet due to the swelling being so bad still. We are icing it regularly.
Only have a few days till my four ducklings hatch. They were set the day after I had set my chick eggs. Can't wait for them to hatch, they are so much fun to have around!
Welcome all new hatchers and chicken lovers!

I now impart to you the wisdom of my Great Grandma Henson: Tear up a brown paper bag and soak it in apple cider vinegar till it is wet. Wrap the swollen limb with the wet paper. Saran wrap it and leave for 30 minutes. Rinse afterward so residual vinegar doesn't scald the skin. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES FALL ASLEEP WITH THIS ON!!!! You will wake in the morning to the equivalent of a sunburn. Been there and done it. One day I will design the T-shirt.

It will work with near miraculous effect. If ever the injury might be bone level ( a blow not a wrench) do not delay in having a doctor look at it. This can reduce swelling even with broken bones but you don't want the bones to begin to heal if they are not in line.

Well it must be something in the water around here! I have my 3rd broody hen this year. One of my production reds now.

Shhh! I have been half expecting one of mine to go broody..for her first time. A Bantam Cochin. She laid all through the winter..like crazy! Almost an egg a day..for weeks on end..still laying every day. What's up with that? They usually go broody by now. She is a yr. old now. I guess..writing this..out loud.. :D won't hurt now, it's getting warmer out there..it would be better than in the winter. And, I will have some eggs to give her once mine get here. Now, let's see what happens. LOL...

OK, this is not good, not good at all... The fan unit in the top of my main bator keeps coming loose from the screws. I am heating up the cooler bator right now, going to transfer the eggs before the unit falls and crushes an egg or a chick. I don't understand how this happened....this is a brand new unit that I just put in and the screws are stripped already?! Think I am going to try to add some glue to try to help hold it together. Must get it fixed before the main event!

Silicon caulking! Squeeze a dab in the hole and then screw in the fixture. Hold with a piece of Duck Tape

, until the silicon has set firmly. The silicon being resistant to heat will last longer than most glues.

WELL

My bator that is brand new had an issue so I had to request a replacement part. GQ was very gracious and sent one right out.

In the meanwhile, I friend loaned me a brand new bator to try out.

Isn't that the sweetest think ever?

I have/had enough eggs to fill both bators.

The neighbor came over with Turkey eggs and a pleading smile. I'm lured in by the adventure of Turkey eggs. They don't fit so every other one is a chicken egg. Yes, I know the chickens will hatch earlier. Kind of puzzled how to deal with that. Should have waited to set them but didn't think it through really good. Was just filling the bator.

So Turkeys are set. Plus some chickens. I know it's early! I still have a bator to fill on Friday. I'm setting to hatch on Friday because our church has a huge 2 day love-feast communion over Resurrection weekend.

Back to the WELL...

So, I have more eggs than will fill the 2nd bator and my mom orders me eggs!

I told her to wait and have them shipped in a couple weeks.

She didn't get the memo and they are coming on Thursday!

I have another friend with a bator he offered to lend me.

Looks like I will be filling 3 incubators to be hatching around Easter! The chickens will be hatching the Monday and Friday before and the Turkeys, the Monday after. I'm in shock.

3 incubators???!!!

Yes, and we carried the box to school so the other kids could see the eggs, then back home again, in the snow, under our coats to keep the eggs warm, uphill both ways, wearing paper bags for shoes, and we were thankful.

And we were just STUMPS then! Didn't even have feet to put shoes on!

But seriously, my mother hatched her geese in the dishwarmer of her mothers firewood cookstove. The dishwarmer is the top cabinets and is heated by warm circulating water in a copper pipe that is kept hot by the firebox. One similar to this:

getting ready! I keep walking into this room to try to "do something" to and realizing there is still over 4 days till set day. I'm going crazy waiting!! I think I need a table. that would help organize it I think. Or a shelf? Growing up the incubator room was always random and cluttered but I feel like I have seen egg rooms that could have been museum displays haha. How is everyone else's "egg room" set up?

This is great! To have it all in one room sounds lovely :) I think it is warm enough here that I could run all 3 of mine in the garden room (attached to the garage) but I like to keep a close eye on things.

One will be in my daughter's room. One hiding on a low table behind the couch and one in my bedroom on the dresser.

With an 11 month old on the prowl I have to hide the plug-in's and make sure she' can't get to the incubators themselves. Kind of limits things. That, and living in a house from the 1940's when they thought it was okay to put one set of plugs on MOST of the walls. That's one area where I like progress, yes I do! A set of plugs every 8 feet all through the house suits me fine :)

Lol
Someone else is a Deadpool fan?! I LOVE that game!

Miss - you may want to make your own sign and not use that one.
Deadpool is aware he is a character in a comic book. He was Marvel's spoof of DC's Deathstroke. Deadpool talks to you... or actually degrades you. He was experimented on. He was a good looking mercenary that was given Wolverine's regenerative powers. It drove him nuts. Plus, he's very disfigured. He's been blown up, drown, decapitated, quartered - he's still alive. He's gross, has a very dirty mind (like most men) and very violent. But funny. My husband wanted the game so I got it for his birthday. He didn't like it (he likes fighting games like Mortal Kombat) so I took over on it. I am very particular on my games, this one made the cut because it keeps me entertained and it's a 3rd person shooter/hack and slash.

Back to chickens...
My automatic humidity bucket came today! I had it hooked up in less than 15 mins! Just in time for this current hatch! I really hope it makes my life a little easier and my hatches got a bit smoother. I still need to get another incubator or hatcher.

I had to ship eggs today and was looking for #7 Priority Mail boxes today. Is anyone else having issues finding them at their POs? I went to 3 trying to get some and I managed to get one. When I came home I got on the USPS site and they are still on there. I ordered 100 of them. I like to double box (medium flat rate inside a #7) shipped eggs. I also splurged a little on a digital scale so I can weight my own boxes and print my own labels at home.

I got my email from Meyer toady - my turkey poults have been shipped! I order 20 of their mixed broad breasted surplus. I am so excited! I know someone who's going to have some turkey in their freezer this year!
