Good morning everyone... Kids are off school today due to snow. I really don't understand why though.... We are lucky to have two inches that fell overnight.... :(

Mine are out too. Had more to do with the sheet of ice from the freezing rain we got than the 2 inches of snow covering it. Plus it was like 3°F here this morning.

I have, ahem, a few turkeys. THis spacing worked well : 8 x 8 housing for 8 bird to roost at night. Definitely go larger as these birds need plenty of room to hop onto a roost and they have their preferred buddies. Also consider space for nests, my girls prefer a dark place in their coop.

That is VERY exciting to be the first Pita Pinta plucker!!

Does that mean you use a power plucker or a hand plucker?? If hand plucking, what temp, and you can pm the killing details-- I"m looking for a . . . cleaner method.
When scalding for hand plucking we use a turkey fryer and the temp is 145 or very close to.
I have plucked in my kitchen already.. You do it over the trash can and have some water in a bowl or bucket near by to get some of the feathers off your hands.

I have yet to pluck in my kitchen yet. I may if I was doing only 1-3 birds at a time but typically we do a batch of 30 and we set up in the garage and do it all in there. We hand pluck. Occasionally DH will skin them.

Hand plucking turkeys is a little tougher, the fluffy under feathers just cling to your hands and fingers makes it more of a pain.

I am IN yeeeehaw! but setting geese. pekin and whoever else is laying...sounds like fun!
I bet I have a few OEGB to set too.

How do we enter the contests ?
When contests are opened they will be mentioned in this thread. The first post will also have links to the contest threads. Currently there are not any open contests, but there will be one or two opening soon!

How do we enter the contests ?

Each contest as it opens up will be made by announcement here so we know it is up running and open to participate. Each contest will typically have a thread made and have rules to follow, some contests are open only to hatch participants while sometimes other contests are open to the entire BYC community. When a contest opens up just read about it and if you want to join that specific contest just follow the rules and post away and have fun.

Question: Can I stagger eggs in my incubator? If so, how does that work with the humidity setting when one group is due to hatch, but another group in there isn't? I have 20 eggs due to hatch on the 17th - but another 20 not due to hatch until a week later.... will the last 20 be ok with higher humidity setting for a few days?
