So ron, you find that the RIR roos are friendly? I hope so! I am going to try and keep one. He is getting close to crowing..watched him this morning flapping his wings, stretching that neck out, running around the yard feeling his oats. I have never owned a rooster before. He is nice when I pick him up..so far. I have a lot of grand kids..so we will see how he works out..and if he doesn't crow a lot. I have one of those collars that will keep the crow soft. Not an eclectic collar everyone! It keeps them from taking in as much air as they need to make the loud crow. Hoping it works. I would so love to have a rooster.
The real deal Reds are like big friendly dogs.

What line is yours from?

ron, I always have a RIR or two out there..lines of my two reds now? Hmmm, not sure..I got them on ebay, I know that he's had them for a while, and other breeds. I love buying eggs from him..I always have great hatches. EE's, leghorns, and sexlinks. Williams and some numbers behind the name..is what he goes by on there. I don't much watch for the lines. Although, I was pretty excited to get some of Dick H. chicks, I knew those were nice .. lines.

that was me - I lost my whole first hatch this year to a thermo that was off by like 5 degrees. Here I thought the temp was a perfect 99.5 and it was like 104. Totally explained all the early quitters. The ones that made it to lockdown were little miracles. They either passed that critical point during the day someone accidentally unplugged the 'bator and then were near the vents so as to be slightly cooler or something. I was going to be happy with the 3 at lockdown that were still moving, but according to eggtopsy, they were gone within the next day due to the high temps. I originally thought it was bacteria, but in my sanitizing the 'bator i found the thermo was bad. I was so bummed to find out I had cooked those sweet little babies by not having multiple thermos to check. Won't make that mistake again.

Next hatch will be better, right?

I have no idea yet. Marans aren't laying. None of the LF AMs, or the SPPRs or the Wellies, or the Sumatras or the Pheonix. So far I have a bunch of youngsters that I need to separate and hatch for purebreds. I have 2 hatches going that are due before and on set day, but most are mixes. Need someone out there to lay a lavender egg, so that's what most of the mixes are for. That's why I have to wait on pures afterwards. One of my Silked AMs, the bantam chocolate, black and lavender AMs are starting up. The Silkies and Black Mottles Japs and bantam Blue Langshuns are starting. Also have 3 quail just starting to lay again. I still have time, so I hope something starts happening in all those other pens.

Are the eggs in your avi laid that color or dyed?

The first of my "hatch before the easter hatch" is hatching! these are coturnix quail and I have one button quail still getting fluffy in the incubator and a few eggs pipped. they are so tiny!

Oh, my! That's no-slip shelf lining, right?
They are tiny!!! and too cute!!!
